DSA through Art
-
Look for schools with AEP programme. eg Bukit Panjang High, CHIJ, Zhonghua secondary school, Victoria, Nanyang Girls’ High.
I have seen the works of AEP students at JC level - very impressive. Definitely talent, hard work and instructions.
How old is your child now? Art is not an overnight endeavour but some kids are obviously talented even without art classes. If looking for an art teacher, look at the teacher’s CV, portfolio and training, materials used, and lesson plans. Different teachers will have their areas of specialisation and if your child has a clear preference, you can try to match that to the teacher’s specialisation.
Some teachers will buy an art folder from the start so that the child starts building up a portfolio. You can also do this yourself, keeping samples of your child’s work carefully. You can keep physical samples and also photographed works. Each piece should be dated with name attached.
The AEP programme has an annual exhibition. You can look out for the next one so as to have a better idea(2013 exhibition is over). -

Hi is it possible to DSA through Art? But not to SOTA, just decent good secondary school?
What kind of of art are those school looking for?
What kind of art courses I can enroll my child?
Depending on age, can consider NAFA as a good art foundation school. Mind the enrolment queue though.

Besides nafa (always long queue) -
which other art centre(s) are good, train up young kids ?
Those secondary school pupils (sec 1 to "a" level in poly / jc / uni ) -
who had managed to dsa successfully, via art -
Dont mind Can name some artists, that you had under studied before, and who had helped you, dsa in art ?
Are these artists local, or from china ?
Which area of specialization, did you learn, in art portfolio ?
Besides aep art exhibition, are there any other art exhibition, parents can visit ? -
Thanks for all the reply. My son is p2 tis year so not very young already.
I am totally alien to music and art so do not know how to start my son on it. He does not want to learn music but he like to draw, do cutting, colour and find things to fix etc… Hope to help him find a niche.
I did have the intention to enroll NAFA, but isn’t it just art lessons? So I just compile all his art works into a portfolio and send in for DSA? I cannot find much info on what type of art is the school looking for… -

I would describe NAFA is an art education elective school. At younger ages they expose kids to basic art techniques. I think it's pretty well run. My girl has been in it since P1 and she wants to continue next year Sec1. You can call them to discuss or PM me separately for more details. Thanks for all the reply. I'm not sure if there are any secondary schools that enrols based on art ability (of course that ability is a supporting factor and must come with other abilities such as reasonably good academics). The closest I can think of is SOTA but they have 'intensive' music and drama besides art as well in the first two years (plus a very challenging program).
Anyway I think P2 is young and if like most kids, your DC is probably just happy to explore art and craft. For that, there are many commercial and PA courses. Unlike my DS who's afraid to get hands 'dirty' ha ha. Or you can pick up wonderful NLB books and become the personal art tutor
P.S. Music can also be as fun -
Greatly appreciate it if any parents can share their kids went to school via DSA Art. Is Performing Arts the same as Art? Tks
