Hi firefly38, not for ds' case, sadly.
since the start of P5 (same teachers for P5 & P6), ds has shared with me many times how he dislikes his EL & CL teachers as they are constantly scolding the class, forfeiting recess time & giving out ridiculous punishments like copying passages. The overemphasis on punishments may have killed any remaining interest in the subject. I know my ds, he could do much better with encouraging & patient teachers. However, under his current ones, he has to find ways to 'siam' as much scolding & punishments as he can. I feel sorry for him as school is supposed to be a fun & enjoyable experience.
Ds enjoys PE lessons very much & since start of P6, PE lessons have been cut from twice to only once a week. Even so, when it comes to his fav PE lessons on Tues, they hardly play for 15 min & lesson is over.
I do recognise that CHS has their own method of churning out good results - teaching methods & materials. Based on ds' current pri school experience, ds & I are wondering if CHS secondary sch is going to be a good choice. It is a convenient one as we live nearby & there's affiliation. Even though CHS may be a top school, I have no qualms about ds going to a less popular secondary school with more passionate, caring & inspiring teachers. That's why I would greatly appreciate any feedback about their secondary teachers.
Hi Sparks, i m sorry to hear that yr ds is feeling miserable in chsp. My ds was fr chsp & in chs Sec 2 now. Overall, i would say he had enjoyed his pri sch days, though the workload got pretty crazy in P5 & P6. Most of the teachers were strict but caring & nurturing. There were 1 or 2 teachers whom most of the boys disliked but i would say they are the exception. About copying out passages, i remember ds used to have to copy 作文,but it was not meant as a form of punishment, rather it was to strengthen their writing skill.
Things are pretty much the same now in the secondary sections, with the teachers being result oriented but within reasonable limit. Perhaps yr ds can talk to some of his seniors in chs to get a better picture? Wishing him all the best for the psle

Hi Cloudybay, thanks for your concern.
Actually, ds is not that miserable as he made some good friends.
it may be good he goes through these anyway so that he toughens up his character. I am just concerned if it affects his learning that's all.
Yes, based on the feedback here, I think CHS secondary is still a good choice.

hi parents,
can i check if CHPS P1 kids are required to write compo based on pictures? If yes, by which Term?
I’m wondering if there is a (kiasu) need to sign up for compo writing enrichment classes for my K1 kid who is (or so we hope!) going into CHPS in 2015…

My dad likes chs but i don’t think i would be able to fit in. Any parents who has nonchristian children going to this school has any difficulty to adjust?

Yes my son is in Sec 1 and not a christian. No problem mixing in. A lot of his school mates are non christian as well. There is no forced activity or any events which caused any anxiety to the students.
What is your concern? Maybe we can help you out? -
Thank you. He is asleep now and he’s relunctant due to fact that he may be influenced by the new classmates/ peer pressure if he joins chs.
If he scores well, priority is njc but distance is quite far as we stay in yishun… so I still think good choice is chs. -
The name’s a misnomer. It (religion) should hardly be a deterrent at all. It’s more of an unfamiliar environment that’s an intimidation to the kids. My boy took all but 3 months from hating, to start loving his school back then.

Tks n give us some assurance. Chs will be one of top choices to convince DS.

We were looking for a school environment which are not so academically focus. CHS offers an unique and proud school tradition and culture. The ip curriculum focus on the learning process, and the school adopt a very open and trusting approach to the students. Not very concern about being the pioneer batch because looking at the pedigree of the 3 partners school, how bad can the jc be?
