If this what I ask for, I would be very happy. But the problem is that this is what other people ask for and so called enforce upon me .....then I won't feel happy.

For years, parents have been complaining that PSLE is testing far beyond what is taught in schools, leading to high levels of stress for kids. So it appears that for this year, Eng and Math have been brought down to those levels.

As for the impact on application to schools, if many students score similarly because many students do similarly well (right down to the last dec place), the allocation will be down to balloting among SCs. The very bright ones will not have an advantage bec their score will not differentiate them from the above average ones who scored similarly. So distribution of students across top and 2nd tier schools will be more random. No more clustering of the top students in top schools bec many students would have scored similarly well.

I like the moral of the story too.
Personally I think in future with only the banding, other factors will come in. Like competition certs, CCAs, teacher's recommendation etc to apply for schools ?
And the consequences are parents will rush to send their kids for such trainings? I dunno. -

haha that's not our problem cos we don't own chains of tuition centres. i'll be happy i don't need to spend $ on tuition. Then tuition centres close down. All these ex-teachers can go back to teaching. Then we have enough experienced teachers, which means we can have smaller class size. That's good!zeemimi:

I like what you put down plainly, bluntly and honestly. I can see ourselves moving away from being a Tuition Nation which is an embarrassment to the Education system. Less stress and more balanced childhood. More rounded education I hope does not mean more emphasis of school allocation on CCA (inclusion as a subject banding for example) which might lead to a flourish of enrichment centre of all sorts of non-acad nature. Then it would still be a busy if not stressful lifestyle for kids, esp those who are not in CCA that they have a passion for. IMHOAsk and ye shall receive.

After the 2009 'killer' Math paper, schools & tuition centers have been preparing their pupils to tackle very difficult Math problems.. Many parents also sent their kids to 'branded' tuition centers which focus only on Paper-2..Ds's tutor is a current pri sch teacher.
He was shocked when he read thru the psle maths paper .. As this was the first time he had encountered such an easy paper :yikes:
Hence, with an 'easy' PSLE paper, these kids (& parents) feel that all their efforts (& money) have gone wasted.. :moneyflies:
Yesterday, my niece jokingly told me that what her school taught her was MORE THAN enough for her to do well in this year's Math paper, and that my sister (her mom) shouldn't have wasted money on tuition (she had Math tuition at a 'branded' tuition center)..

I would like it as the widening of the top tier, ie, there is less differentiation among the IP schools.
See, when it's so close that there's a photo finish, say, among the top 10% of the cohort! then whoever gets to go into what we perceived as THE top school may not be the brightest but just those who won the race by the mere '0.001sec.'. So we get better distribution of that band of kids and water down the 'top schools' effect.
On top of that, these parents may also come to realise that additional tuition may not be providing such added value in terms of the dollar so the tuition industry may no longer be as lucrative as before. -

Then every pupil will be 'equally' good.. And every school (including Sec Schs) will be 'equally' good.. And every parent will be 'equally' happy.. And we all shall move backwards together, hand in hand, 'happily', shan't we?
