2013 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Ms tay:
After the 2009 'killer' Math paper, schools & tuition centers have been preparing their pupils to tackle very difficult Math problems.. Many parents also sent their kids to 'branded' tuition centers which focus only on Paper-2..Ds's tutor is a current pri sch teacher.
He was shocked when he read thru the psle maths paper .. As this was the first time he had encountered such an easy paper :yikes:
Hence, with an 'easy' PSLE paper, these kids (& parents) feel that all their efforts (& money) have gone wasted.. :moneyflies:
Yesterday, my niece jokingly told me that what her school taught her was MORE THAN enough for her to do well in this year's Math paper, and that my sister (her mom) shouldn't have wasted money on tuition (she had Math tuition at a 'branded' tuition center)..
Ms Tay.. ALL THE BEST to your DS2 on his PSLE !! :rahrah: -

Change to offer DSA prep course, leadership workshop, CCA trainings .....zeemimi:
Actually I'm happy if this is going to be the trend. Then i don't have to spend so much time drilling my going-to-take-psle-in-a-few-years'-time-kiddo at home. Set her free to explore more things outside academics.
if PSLE is easy, then it does save lots of money for the parents! this is the plus point...NO need tuition!
Then tuition centres how? -

Hmmm...that may not be such a bad things after all.Ask and ye shall receive.
For years, parents have been complaining that PSLE is testing far beyond what is taught in schools, leading to high levels of stress for kids. So it appears that for this year, Eng and Math have been brought down to those levels.
Happy?
As for the impact on application to schools, if many students score similarly because many students do similarly well (right down to the last dec place), the allocation will be down to balloting among SCs. The very bright ones will not have an advantage bec their score will not differentiate them from the above average ones who scored similarly. So distribution of students across top and 2nd tier schools will be more random. No more clustering of the top students in top schools bec many students would have scored similarly well.
Happy?
Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for.
I would like it as the widening of the top tier, ie, there is less differentiation among the IP schools.
See, when it's so close that there's a photo finish, say, among the top 10% of the cohort! then whoever gets to go into what we perceived as THE top school may not be the brightest but just those who won the race by the mere '0.001sec.'. So we get better distribution of that band of kids and water down the 'top schools' effect.
On top of that, these parents may also come to realise that additional tuition may not be providing such added value in terms of the dollar so the tuition industry may no longer be as lucrative as before. -

Then every pupil will be 'equally' good.. And every school (including Sec Schs) will be 'equally' good.. And every parent will be 'equally' happy.. And we all shall move backwards together, hand in hand, 'happily', shan't we?

MOE's priority should be education....
if PSLE is easy, then it does save lots of money for the parents! this is the plus point...NO need tuition!
Then tuition centres how?
Should the profits of tuition centres be MOE's responsibility? I don't think so.
Though, I believe the govt. will definitely take the impact into consideration as well. After all, I believe the growth of this sector is driven in part by some 'bad' policies on the govt. side. -

...No wonder MOE knows that there is a very big gap between the good student and the average student in terms of attitude towards fellow classmate. My DD is in an integrated class that is mixed with GEP students... You can already see the attitude among them.. And it's not good
Your first hand experience? That's something I want to confirm.
My DD Sch hv mix the top 10% of the mainstream with the GEP during certain lesson..which mean during MT & some other gathering they will be mix together.. Hence DD will be going to some of the GEP class or vice versa .. -

Agree!! And hopefully more even distribution of talent

As a parent who has never encouraged tuition (except for those who really need it) and pushed ds only to push himself as far as he can n learn independently, trusting in his sch teachers n his own ability and effort, I am happy with the papers so far. And glad that, regardless of how it translates into a final tscore, the psle has so far been a positive experience after a yr of hard work and diligence.
