Higher Chinese in P5 - To opt or not

GEPers will not be given bonus points when applying to SAP schools even if they score distinctions in HCL; non-GEPers will get bonus points when applying to SAP schools if they do well in HCL. This was made known to me by both my sons' teachers last year and this year.Chirunner:

that is strange ! you mentioned your kids in NYPS ? we are talking about kids having HCL - Higher Mother Tongue (be it GEPper or not), will get bonus points when applying for SAP schools, NOT about GEPper per se -

Chirunner, do NYPS GEPers take HCL or only GE CL enriched curriculum?
There is a separate paper for HCL in PSLE.
We all agree that those who took HCL (HMTL) and score a pass or above are entitled to bonus points for admission to SAP schools.
So it doesn't make sense if GEPers take HCL exam but are excluded thus in admission exercise, don't u think? -

The S1 exercise form from MOE does not make a distinction between GEPers or non-GEPers and for those who passed the HCL, they will receive a letter together with the S1 form informing them they either get 1, or 2, or 3 bonus points if they apply to SAP school, and of course if their aggregate T-score are within range of the COP for the SAP school. -

NYPS GEPers take HCL. I have not seen GEP HCL worksheets from other schools so can't say they're the same but my son's teacher just told me 2 days ago that they are NYPS' own enriched worksheets.Chirunner:

Both teachers told me in 2 different years that GEPers don't get bonus points cos they've already been given many privileges for entry into sec school. Perhaps you can query the school on 30 Jan n let us all know? -

Please enlighten us on the many priviledges?? -
First off the curriculum is already enriched, and most make it to IP schools even without meeting the cut off. In RI n HCI there’s a separate track for DSA for GEPers. In HCI they don’t need to take any GA test or tests for math, English n Chinese. Once admitted to IP schools they will get the EESIS or equivalent scholarships.
However, GEP’s not a guaranteed ticket to success cos these kids have to show not only aptitude but also attitude. I suppose MOE recognizes these kids are different n though gifted are typically asynchronous in their development hence may not perform consistently in mainstream exams but may be brilliant in their area of specialty/interest n it would a shame to let them fall by the wayside if they don’t meet the PSLE cut off for these schools. Hence their performance and attitude toward enrichment during the GEP years are very important. -

In a recent briefing by HCI in Nov 2009, they said that GEPpers are exempt from GAT test in DSA, but still have to do Eng & Chinese test

My son only attended an interview n wrote an essay. Perhaps the requirement has changed for 2010?

Hi Mummies,
I happened to see this thread. It's very interesting
Higher CL is for children who are aiming for SAP secondary school right? And taking it at PSLE means the child has to do NORMAL CL as well as HCL paper. Is taking HCL solely for the purpose of SAP secondary ?
I hope to find out more because my son is in P4 this year in a SAP school. Still deciding whether he should drop HCL next year to focus on CL.
Please give me more advice. Thanks
