Haha...my DS2 is a bit Kiasu type. He will want to do it as long as I gently suggest to him. But he is like any 9 years old, will have his moments of 'eating snakes' when he feels like it. :evil:

1 week discovery sci camp full day, 1 week chess lesson ( half day) , 4 days chess + maths competition , plus my bro with family visiting for 5 days and finishing the year with a 3 weeks vacation ( huge family reunion)

Hi, I am joining this thread. I am a FTWM. My ds born in dec 2004. Exams over, we are kinda in a relaxed mood. But to keep up the momentum, we will still try to do a few pages of assessment book daily. Otherwise, too much idle time at home.

Both DS are now working together to research on our upcoming trip. They will put information together into a scrap books to bring along during the holiday. That will keep them occupy for a while

What's your techniques to teach your ds to do the assessment books? Mine will scream and run away.

Hi susu, I do not have any special technique to get him to do any work… I merely told him what he can look forward to after he finishes his work… My boy is kiasu by nature… He will want to finish up his work so that he can bury his head into his story books or scientific books or puzzles once he is done… I only need my boy to do one hour of work daily during his school holidays… Just focus for one hour, he gets the rest of the day to himself… Good deal isn’t it?


My boy gets to suggest which outdoor activity to have or place to go or restaurant to eat every weekend if he has been well behaved for one whole week… Meaning that my parents and hubby do not complain that he refuse to do the allocated homework or help with housework etc…

My boy is not pampered despite being the first grandchild for both sides of the family… I also talk to my son about his future… Kids do not understand how things will turn out when they grow up… Need to educate them sometimes…

DS2 has this 'Kiasu' nature in him, so it is easier in that sense. I think it is really his personality. We do not have any techniques. However, what I noticed about DS is that we just have to 'remind and suggest' at the right time. E.g if DS is enjoying a book, I will gently suggest he starts on his assessment BUT will ask him what is a good time, that works for him because he is in charged. It works for me too because he will suggest starting in say 15mins , 30mins and not tomorrow!
DS is not bothered with what his classmates are scoring, he is not interested to know. But he will be concerned if his marks dropped compared to previous exam or when he is no longer top few for certain subject (when teacher announces). He is also more anxious than me to know which class he will be going to for P4. I think he sets a certain target and is using it to benchmark aganst himself, very unlike my DS1.
