Well, here are the obvious options for the neighbour,

1) Opt out of the extra lesson as it is not compulsary. It should be after school, quite surprise to hear is during school time. Between school time is 7:30am to 1:35pm.

2) Opt out of the canteen by not buying if the neighbour feels the food is expensive, pack some food for their own kids to bring to school.

3) Opt out of the school if the neighbour thinks that everything in CH is more expensive than other schools. There is a long Q outside the school door for those who wanted to opt in.

Between, I thought only Singaporean like me likes to complain, seems like PR nowadays loves to complain too.

If nothing goes wrong, there should be sessons, where Parents meet Teacher and Parents meet Principal. It will be good time to feedback. Or the neighbour can go to school and talk to Principal direct. but better start with teacher first. Even better, can drop an email to the Principal.

Good schools usually do not have much problem in getting good results as they have already a good system built, even that one year that they did not come top in Singapore, they are still a lot better than the rest. So a lot more effort are also put in to character building while the other school are playing catchup for results.

Believe it or not, its up to your neighbour. But I think speaking for myself, I will be a very different person today if I wasn’t there then.
Hi pokeman

Most of the parents i know have done our research & wants our DS to be in CHS bcos of its culture & environment. Hence my apology if i sounded :x ...cos its rather annoying dat yr neighbour get into CHS & now complains of $$, tchers too free & etc. I have friends' DS who did not get in and r now still on waiting list...some r still waiting now even though their DS is now at Pri. 3.
Im sure there are bound to have other parents who feel the same as my neighbr or having 'culture shock' :!: , they may juz remind silent since they have voluntarily chosen it for their ds n some more a reputable sch, some want to save face or either they do not kn what other schs systems are like.

Though sm parents may hv done research bt some fine details or new pgm introduce from sch may nt be known to them. Most parents assumed all govt pri sch system cannot differ so much. Tis is juz my opinion, im nt siding anyone.
Thks for sharing yr tot. I'm puzzled as these \"some parents\"if they hve indeed did their HW & research...why the \"culture shock\"? Even though based on standard modules, each schs hve their own ways of teaching. I personally went to both Aitong & CHS, & also spoken to parents before making my decision. And i can tell you its totally 2 different system. These group of parents r obviously choosing CHS just becos its an elite sch & its near to their hse...i doubt the research they hve done. Well good luck to these group of parents as this is only the beginning of their DS 6yrs in sch...while we are fretting abt our DS's study now...they can carry on complaining. Just my tot. 😉

Hi JocC,
Great to hve yr support! Guess I'm a little too fire up
The main issue just boiled down to simply becos she is a PR and hence she did not enjoy any benefit & have to pay $$.
If she is not a PR, I'm very sure dat she will not complain at all!

Indeed I agree.. Hw should be done before choose CHS.... My boy was transferred to CHS, and I definitely have done my research and my DS views, before I chose CHS. And very true, different schools have their ways of teaching, values, missions and goals.

The whole issue is that she is a PR and she have to pay more for everything... she can be a citizen if she want to pay less... SIngaporean citizens should be given priority and of course more benefits.

Just my own view:

Cheers to CHS…there are so many supportive parents in this forum.
Those of you who said that it may not be possible that the enrichment classes held during school time, I think you have forgotten that when your DS was in P1 and P2, all the enrichment classes are held during their class time. For example, Chinese & English speech and drama class, vocal training during music lessons and even gymnastic during PE lessons…
So, please spare a thought for this new parents as they may not be familiar with Singapore’s school. I don’t think they meant to complaint but just to voice out their doubt to the neighbour.
Personally I feel that 300 bucks is quite a lot to pay for enrichment classes, even if we are Singaporean who can use edusave to pay for the fees.
There are many families who not only have 1 or 2 children but think for those who have 3 or 4 children. It will add up a hefty sum if all of them are studying in CHS. I am sure there are many others schools which also have the same programs as CHS, therefore, it will just take a little more time and understanding for this Indonesian parents to get used to CHS.
There are many more to come which involved $ in CHS. I am sure they will get use to it after a few years in CHS.
The suggestions of withdrawing their child from CHS is really ridiculous, ask yourself, would you withdraw your DS from CHS just because you do not agree with such trivial matter??
When I am around the school, I heard so many parents complaining about CCAs policy, teachers, the principle, even the toilets…I doubt you have never complaint about the school before? Why didn’t you withdraw your DS then?
In all, I don’t think this Indonesian parents are out to complaint about PR not getting the same benefits as Singaporean. They were just puzzled by why they should pay high fees for enrichment classes which held during school time.
I personally feels that it is not an issue of PR Vs Singaporean…

Hi everyone, being new in CHS, I am very happy to see that the boys are rather well-behaved during recess, kicking balls around the parade sq in their own various groups. In fact, 1 boy fell down in a little corner, all by himself. 5 secs later, a group of boys was crowding around him, presumably to find out how bad his fall was.

I honestly think CHS is a good environment for the boys to grow up in. I've heard from various ones that academically, CHS may not be that outstanding but balancing it with sports and instilling good values, I should say it is an excellent school.

Having interacted with a few teachers, I can see that they really do care for the boys and have their interests at heart. I also think that since the parent support group is so active, the culture is very positive.

Just MHO 🙂

hmm… Let me think… I really cannot recall me having complaint on the following…,

1. CCAs policy: it is compulsary only from P3. So P1 & P2 can opt out.
2. Teachers: I work very closely with the teacher when it concerns my DS.
3. Principal: He has is way and vision of how CH is managed.
4. Toilets: hmm… I thought they are all very clean even the ground floor ones which are near the canteen.

What about the rest of you?

PR, well, there exists an option to convert to Singaporean. There is a Chinese saying "You cannot have Fish and Bear Paw together" which means there is no such thing as having the best of both worlds without sacrifying something.
