Its only now that I chance upon this thread ... my dd1 is 2004 baby too.
Gosh, I have been one lazy mum ... I don't know anything about the assessment books that everyone is talking about here!!!
 :yikes:
Better pop in here more often ... -

Speaking of Popular, I missed their Sept sale at Expo. Is there a chance they are going to have another assessment books sale in Nov/Dec?
Hi,
The next Popular sale will be from 13 - 22 Dec at Expo.
Wonder why the sale is held so late!!!!
Looks like we need to do some shopping of assessment book before the sale otherwise how to prepare DC for term 1.... -

Thanks for this info.Lalamum:
I think I'll get my dd to complete the assessment books that we have at home first. Cementing her P3 knowledge is also a good-enough prep for P4.Wonder why the sale is held so late!!!!
Looks like we need to do some shopping of assessment book before the sale otherwise how to prepare DC for term 1....

the 20% voucher is given out in sep...which is rather silly because that is the preparation period for SA2 :slapshead: buying new assessment books for the new school year is the last thing on my mind. -

Hi nansk,nansk:
For Maths may be just buy the PSB book by Fabian Ng...
Do you mean Problem-Solving Processes in Maths by Fabian Ng?
We bought Fabian Ng's Challenging Problems book for P3, but dd did not complete it.
OnSponge (and it's successor - Get Me Thinking - was a bust here. DD did not really understand or like those explanations.
At least she attempted parts of Fabian Ng's Challenging Problems book...
Yes you are correct. sorry for the typo error there..
DD did not manage to finish the PSP book too.. so told her to try completing it before we move on to P4 level. Found she is bit careless and PSP book is good for repeatitive practice questions.
School forced to complete the onsponge book and we completed the get me thinking at home. Found both useful.
Another book I like to use is shaping maths assessment book..
This is the sequence I let my DD attempt maths assessment books
First do a topic on:
1) Shaping Maths (basic level questions and some problem sums)
2) Get me thinking (problem sums with good explanation, lay foundation for onsponge)
3) PSP (lots of repeative practice of similar type of questions, but DD hates this book)
4) OnSponge
What about chinese? Which Assessment books you find good?
English also I am yet to decide..Last year I bought lot of Conquer titles..
So thinking If good to continue with it..or move to other publisher like Casco, MC..
Mother777, does your DD attempt every question in \"Get me Thinking\". It is a thick book. If not, how do you determine which topic or questions to do since she is concurrently doing other assessment books. I also have this book but when I look at some topic, e.g Fraction, I find that similar concept are only taught at P4 level (at least that is the case for my DS1). Hence, we have not attempted those  .
This brings me to another question... how much time does she spend on Maths? -
Hi happy heart,
We managed to finish all books except the PSP book by Fabian Ng.
My dd attempts the book in the order I listed in my earlier post. From easy to higher level. For any topic she starts in book 1 and then progresses to next book for same topic.
I find ‘get me thinking book’ quite good as it shows step by step how to draw model and solve.
On sponge is taught in school so I just look into it to clear doubts. As such teacher sends back most of the worksheet as homework to be done at home.
PSP book was not finished as it has too many repeated type questions. DD doesn’t like working on same type of questions. But dd is trying to complete the PSP book now. Just to revise before we move on to P4 level.
I did buy the FAN math heuristics book. But we left it incomplete after one topic as the rest of the books were quite advanced than that one. Thinking of not buying it this year. Too many books are stressful too.
Before exams we will attempt past year papers.
I really don’t calculate how much time she spends on maths. I just assign her task each night for each subject which she needs to complete the next day. I am a working mom so this works fine for me.
She will try to complete whatever she can. Any doubts are cleared when I am back. I try to do correction the same day before moving on to next topic.
DD1 is my first born. So trying to find the best way to guide her learning journey. I realized that she has some issues with fraction type questions. But working on PSP book is helping her.
There are many more experienced Ksp parents here. And am still trying to learn from them. -
Mother776, your dd is so DILIGENT!!!

Thank you for sharing! Your DD is as diligent as you, and I am sure as she advances to higher level, she will be very independent as she already has the discipline so deeply rooted in her at an early stage! Must learn more from you :please: -
Hi sleepy and happyheart,
Agree that my DD is hard working and mostly she will try to complete the homework assigned to her.
But she is still a kid, so sometimes will drag her work, or be distracted by my son who is 3 yrs old only.
Overall she will try her best.
I gave her one whole week free of homework (except Chinese tuition homework) after Sa2. She was so very happy
She loves to read too. So this holiday letting her read books and doing some book review with her.
How do you guys handle compo practice for English and Chinese? This is one area I feel we both need to show more attention.. -

Thanks! This is helpful to know.

So do you have any idea if there is still a chance to get the 20% off voucher at Popular?
