      :)I don’t think there is anything convoluted about what I 1st post…

Go read what you yourself posted…u were the 1 who is provocative…by insinuating and deducing what I implying and what I expected school to do like reprimand these parents!? U may think u are clarifying, but sorry to say , but the way you ask, sound more like confrontation and reprimanding me:)
Anyway, this is not the 1st time I ‘taste’ your kind of mannerism…

Anyway, not interested to argue with u on this…

      Back to more impt thing.
just to share, in case there r parents who are keen to brain storm on how to appeal to pei hwa
…I just found out, that 1 school gives back all compos plus oral will show marks and even show tchr’s comments on weaknesses of oral, like too soft, lack of contect etc…
but I cannot reveal school’s name, to RESPECT that parent who requested not to name the school.but is also a branded school…
Parents who wana know can pm me…
so my point is, not giving back compo and reveal oral’s marks, is NOT MOe 's instructions!!
&'just to clarify, I am not a kiasu parent whose child is already very good and trying to reach full marks. .on the contrary, my child is average, thus feel the need to see the compos to help child to improve…am sure many parents r like me…
      Thanks!!

About exam compo marking, I like to share my experience and thoughts.

My elder boy was with Bt Panjang Pri Sch from P1 to P3. We definitely did not get back HOME the compos done during exams. Whether the compos were given back to the pupils in class to take a look, this I cant remember. I dun think my elder boy would remember either.

In Pei Hwa, exam compos are never returned HOME for parents to see.

Yes, I also heard the reason is "do not want to subject to parents asking for more marks".

In the past, I questioned why exam compos cant be returned to let parents take a look.

Now, I do not think so anymore.

Not becos I know the sch will never entertain this request, but bcos I see no point in seeing.

1stly, I am not trained to mark compo. There must be a structured marking scheme to award based on language and content. If I am not trained, how can I argue my child deserves better marks than was awarded?

2ndly, I believe the compo practices during non-exam periods should hv given feedback on what the strengths and weaknesses are. If wait until exam to know how to improve, I think it is kinda late liao.

3rdly, I hv called the class teacher to get a feel of how my child had done for the compo. Marks are not revealed, but the teacher would tell me areas to improve on.

As for Oral, Pei Hwa has improved on its feedback format. During my elder boy’s time, there was no info on PAPER at all. Now each pupil brings back a feedback form, broken down into a few headings with specific info on how the pupil has performed.

As for whether instructions are from MOE, I believe it is better to write in to MOE to clarify. Knowing MOE’s style, it is likely "to be advisable to xxx", meaning each sch is given the discretion to do either this or that.

I know of some teachers in Pei Hwa who gave minimal feedback or sometimes no feedback at all on the practice compos. In such cases, it is really frustrating for parents.

Other than getting a tutor to coach in compo writing, I suggest the engagement of compo marking services by a service provider who advertised its services in this forum. The fees paid is affordable for each compo and comes with a detailed assessment of the child’s compo and listing areas to improve. I hv used the service and would recommend the service to other parents. * I am not linked to this service provider * just sharing my experience *

I am puzzled by what you said. Becos phpps does reveal the marks for oral and compo to the pupils in class. Also comments on oral are given on a piece of paper for pupils to bring home. This has been the practice for the past few years. The only thing they don't give back to the parents is the compo.

My understanding is not all teachers reveal the marks. Compo is marked in the exam style meaning mistakes are either circled or underlined. Students won't know what is wrong. Actually you can talk to the teachers. They will let you know your kid's weakness.

To me, the school should disclose the marks in the feedback form even if they are not returning the scripts. Keke.....it's my child's 杰作, of course I would like to know how he performed.

P.S. I believe my DS broke PH P2s record by writing the longest compo in his SA2. Yes, I do feel disappointed that I don't get a chance to read but the teacher did tell me his score was close to his test.

I have heard disturbing feedback from kids at PHPPS that they are sometimes taught the WRONG thing by their teachers. One P3 girl said their teacher told her that wrong science facts and one p5 boy said their English teacher told them erroneous things too. Are there other parents with the same experience? Also, is it true that only the top 2 classes in Pei Hwa are given opportunities to shine eg Olympiads etc, whereas the kids from the 3rd class down don’t generally get many of the best teachers and are allocated less resources? Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

In the past I think the sch did allocate the better teachers to the top 2 classes and give more enrichment based lessons.

With the now PSLE trends, I think the sch has shifted its emphasis to make each class a good class. The overall PSLE % has improved in the range of 240 to 260 whereas the % in top range is declining.

I hv personal experience not in teachers teaching the wrong stuff (b4 P6), but my child was confused over what was taught for EL becos he misunderstood. My child has the issue of not hearing properly or jumping into conclusion. Hence I also do not know whether it is really the fault of the teacher. I do not hv any issue with other subjects like MT, Sci and Maths, only EL. I spent last year sch hols to correct many misconceptions in EL with my boy.

My advice to all parents is to buy a Practice makes Perfect - EL Grammar and sit through the assessment book with your child at year end.
