My DS is looking at badminton & fencing, any experience required to join either one of these CCA? Thanks.Well, to be honest, the ccas which are more difficult to join without experience are all the sports ccas except for canoeing and gymnastics (where there are sports trials but do not require past experience and Ive got a couple of friends who got selected just because they can do many pull ups etc.) . Apart from sports ccas, choir is a good choice too and there is a trial which one will have to sing along with the keyboard on pitch. There are also many pros than cons in joining uniformed groups as it is easy to get A and the two points.
PS : Band is a rather time-intensive cca and have trainings almost everyday so one should have a second thought before choosing to join band ( written not in a discouraging way) -
Hi, for badminton, the available spots are usually filled up by dsa people like table tennis ( I went for table tennis trials and heard the teacher saying that there is only one spot available) so definitely experience is needed and for fencing, Im not quite sure but I believe is the same as my friends in fencing have taken lessons since young

Thank you for the quick response. What about club like Robotics, is there any pre-requisits? Doesuniform group like Scout has intensive schedule? -

Agree with this point mentioned earlier -> SJI is a good school that nurtures the young boy into a responsible man who is eager to serve the society and the world.
Also agree for one whose top concern is band grading, SJI may not be the best choice for you.
Life is life, as part of growing up, my son had his fair share of issues with classmates and teachers but we are really happy to see him maturing and being more responsible. There are many good teachers, some more ordinary than others.
For sports CCA, agree that there are limited vacancies and mostly filled by DSA boys. There's still a chance if your boy gets talent-spotted during the sports trial the school will conduct after orientation.jheng:
Robotics is a 2nd CCA ie. your son needs to take a main CCA and can take Robotics as 2nd CCA if permission for 2nd CCA is granted by school.Thank you for the quick response. What about club like Robotics, is there any pre-requisits? Doesuniform group like Scout has intensive schedule?

My son is in Scouts, manageable so far. Their had job week in March and several camps over the year. Most of the communication and activities are done of the boys (elected leaders), the teachers do not get very involved - as intended. Hence, sometimes there are bits of mis-communication etc but all manageable and allows the boy to hone their leadership skills. My son did tennis in primary school, didn't get in tennis CCA but he enjoyed Scouting so far. -
Thank you pixiedust! :thankyou:

Hi jheng,
for fencing I assume same as other CCA, the school will conduct a trial selection.
perhaps to gauge yr footwork and sieve out those boys with potential
Boys who have been exposed to fencing def have an advantage.
But I am rather disappointed on the activities the school have planned for the fencing team. Rather inactive, team only took part in the national inter-school competition and nothing else. If you intend to groom yr boy in fencing, you will need to join some fencing clubs etc. -
My ds got into his first choice SJI…
This morning called up to the school to check the COP for this year… and the staff said is the same as last year… which is 245 -
