GEP P5's score is much lower than mainstream right ? So if I use that score, the T-score \"no eyes see\" :gloomy:
T Score is indirect way of ranking. It shows , in a group , how much better one is than the average range. So if T score is calculated for thr GEPpers as a group , it will show their relative strength. Just because the paper is much tougher than mainstream, it doesnt mean the T score will be low. If most score quite low, the T score can still be high.Nebbermind:
GEP or not, the T-score calculation is done the same way..if I am not wrong!
I believe his concern is the higher difficulty level of the GEP papers.
Like eg
Case A: If a boy scored 95 in maths, while the average range is between 65 to 75 ( about 68% of kids got within this range)
Case B : If another boy in another class got 98 in maths, while the average range is between 80 to 95 ( about 68% of kids got within this range)
Then case A shows the paper was tough, most kids could score quite low , so the T score will be higher than Case B
Because while Raw marks in Case B numerically higher than the Case A , we can see that in case B, most kids found the paper easy to score , so a 98 in this paper has a lesser value than 95 of Case A -

Now that everything is so hush hush, won't parents be even more kiasu to deal with the uncertainty? Parents just want the qns set at psle to be within the parameters of what's been taught. They did not ask for all this secrecy. Is the govt reading too much into it and making parents upset again with their wrong interpretation of what parents want?711mum:
Not all school will provide the mean and standard deviation nowadays. It used to be printed on the result slip but now school is so hush hush even the subjects highest mark is no longer revealed! With all the unknown, how do parents know when to press the panic button?

Even the mean and SD would be diff for diff schools so we will not know how reflective is the info of the actual situation -

Thanks kiasuFoo for your help. I've got into contact with her and today was my dd's first lesson. It was satisfying and my dd seems to like her.
Hi, I am new to kiasuparents and happened to come across this thread. I have also came across a very experienced and caring chinese tutor. She is a nice tutor and really pull my grades up during my psle. I really need to thank her for the efforts put in.
I am a mother of 3 children. The first one already entered his secondary school phrase, the second just finish her psle, the third taking his next year :frustrated: Tiring :faint: my first two's chinese havent been up to standard especially my first ds. His chinese standard is near failing when he was P6. Still remember that year searching for tutor high and low :?: but finally came across one of the better ones. After trying for a mth, I immediately :siam: from the chinese tuition centre and put all my hope on the tutor. (Like I taking psle instead of my child) She is quite experienced and very understandable. My second and third are still having her as their chinese tutor. My first got his psle result that year and recieved an A for chinese. Miracle really happened thankfully. My dd's prelim got an A* for chinese and Merit for HCL. Kiasu mum here is hoping for A* and distinction when the psle results are out. You can pm me for her contacts and more information. Good tutors must be known, experienced mum here knows the anxiety every parent is going through now.kiasuFoo:

My DD's Chinese grade had also dropped a lot and seems it's difficult to come up... :nailbite:
It's not too early to start.. in fact I would think it's late.... cos language requires some time and effort to move up and takes no effort at all to drop!!!! :imdrowning: -
Back from holidays. Hope you all had good rest and now ready for the battle. All the best.

A lot of parents pmed me and are interested in the tutor I recommended. Several responded that they found her a nice tutor and is suitable for teaching their kids. You may wish to also share about your tutor and also your psle experience here more. I am sure many parents r eager to hear from personal experience from a student. It's also a good start to familiar yourself here in this forum
