All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers
Learning fast is one thing, must also make sure details are inside (sorry, not meaning to say that your ds is not doing this, but just a reminder). I've seen many who can play all the notes, learn fast, play fast but no details whatsoever.
I'm lost. What is details?
His last internal exam was in December 2009. He waited patiently for the exam even though he nailed in by August/September. Comments on the result \"excellent!\" on first song & \" play expressively, well done!\" on the second.
Perhaps you can check with the school if it's their policy for all students to start with Grade 1 as well as the circumstances for grade skipping. Some music schools may prefer to start their students from ground zero initally.
Not sure what happen here. The teacher told me that I need to apply the exam online & do not go through the school. She told me she will be teaching him very fast but yesterday after the 1st lesson, ds only spent 20 minutes practising.
He just need to learn 2 lines (both hands) and the exam piece 2 lines right hand only. If that is the pace, he will not even want to practice until the very last minute. Or end up, he teaching & nit picking on me instead.
I will discuss with the teacher again. -
Do piano teachers increase the fee only when the child has passed a grade? In my case I do not want my child to take exams every year but the teacher does teach her the stuff for a particular grade even if she is not taking exam that year. Is it common for the teacher to ask for an increase in fee?
-
It is common for teachers to increase fees yearly. Some play for "fun" ie no pressure on exams, so if that’s the case, the teacher will be teaching higher grade pieces but yet charging beginners’ fees. Some teachers/music schools are charging per hour fees, so for example if you choose to have 45 min lesson, you pay $x and if it’s 60 min, you pay $y, regardless of grade.
Details in music means the articulation, dynamics, phrasing etc etc. This will distinguish the pass from the merit, from the distinction. -

Thanks for the explanation. -
Hi pianojazzy, do you teach at bukit panjang area? I have two kids, one doing grade 1 and the other doing grade 3.
If you do not teach at my area, can you recommend anyone for me please?

Hi Mickey,
The most important thing to do now is to strengthen his foundation. He may be despaired that he cannot read notes properly and has to spend a lot of time figuring out the notes to practise the piece properly.
Is he in a group lesson or 1-1? -

jce Thanks for the clarification. Now I feel better that I am not 'spoiling the market' cause I have offered to increase the teacher's fee as she has not done so for several years. Although it is my idea for not letting my kids chase after that piece of paper every year but I can see that my kids have progressed hence I feel their teacher deserves an increment. -

My child came to me one day and said after his piano exam this time, he does not want to learn any more. As teacher or parent, how would you response to it?
