ST My Points - 6 A1s 4A2s can't get into Hwa Chong

no lah .. 6 A1s no need to take the less travelled roads. Just reality is that it is not good enough to enter Hwa Chong. But good enough for the relatively less popular JCs. -

There are a lots of students with 7A1s and above !!
That COMPLAIN QUEEN is demanding a reply from MOE & Hwa Chong JC as to why her daughter cannot get in to HC JC.
If it is a case of others with inferior O Level result are accepted & her daughter are not, then I understand. But she must know that is S'pore that there a lot of other students got better results than her girl.
What rubbish from this MS TOH SIEW TIN !! -

DR HON CHIEW WENG, principal, Hwa Chong Institution: 'I refer to Ms Toh Siew Tin's letter on Saturday, 'O-level disadvantage: Six A1s and four A2s - but failed to win a place in first-choice JC'. We congratulate Ms Toh's daughter on her good performance. The cut-off point is calculated using the L1R5 scoring system, and not the number of distinctions attained. This scoring system takes into account the student's first language (L1) and five relevant subjects (R5), which must include at least one from Mathematics, Science and Humanities. Each school's cut-off point varies from year to year, depending on the number and quality of applicants who apply under the Joint Admission Exercise. This year, Hwa Chong's cut-off point for both the Arts and Science streams is 3. This includes bonus deductions for passing Higher Mother Tongue and outstanding Co-Curricular Activities records. We regret that not everyone who puts Hwa Chong as his first-choice school was posted to us. We wish Ms Toh's daughter all the best.' -

Poor lady has to wake up to reality…3 points is about right cos RI(RJ) also like that.

For top JCs most of the places are taken by the IP students started from Sec 1. To secure a place in these schools, the students should try to get in during the earlier phases like;
1. PSLE - get a good score to get in an IP school
2. DSA - good at certain area which the IP schools want
3. GEP - most students can get into IP through DSA
But frankly speaking I don’t think one should make a fuss over this "can’t get into good school with good result". I know more than half of the A level students in RJC get straight As for all subjects (8 or 9 subjects) every year. But can everyone get into medicine or law eventually? I don’t think so… Most will still end up with business, engineering or IT. -
A complete waste of ST forum space! A truly concerned parent would’ve done her research before writing in. No JCs owe your child a place. If you’re not good enough, then go to the next college. Why waste everybody’s time! And busy Dr Hon even bother to reply her. Haiz.

This is very cruel, but is a fact of life. What to do, we have to accept the fact and move on because in later part of their life, they would sure come across many of these \"not good enuf\" in their learning cycle, working life and maybe parenting life too.
All it needs is somebody to be blunt enuf to tell her \"Sorry, my dear, your girl is not good enuf !!\"
