需要：need to have, i.e. essential （acts as a Verb; followed by Noun; can also act as a Noun)

须要：must have (is an Auxiliary Verb before proper Verb; cannot be used as a Noun)

Also tone of 须要 is a bit stronger than 需要

我个人比较倾向使用 \" 需要 \" 。 在报章上, 也很少出现 \" 须要 \"。
例子:
1) 我需要努力工作, 才能嗛钱养家。
2) 他是个需要很多爱的人。

\" 讲究\" 通常搭配对衣着很讲究 ; 对食物很讲究。
要根据句子才能确定哪个才是正确的选择。

(1)教育儿童须要耐心。
　　(2)做这件工作须要十分认真、细心。
　　(3)你们团须要在天亮前赶到埋伏地点。
　　(4)乡村教师须要有奉献精神。
　　“需要”常表示“应该有”或“必须有”的意思。例如：
　　(5)我们需要一支强大的海军。
　　(6)做这件事，需要专业人士参加。
　　(7)他们需要200斤大米和20条棉被。
　　(8)这几个学生很需要老师的帮助和指导。
　　
就现在的使用情况而言，近些年“需要”的使用范围逐步扩大，目前“需要”已经基本可以代替“须要”来使用。
　　
也就是说，凡是使用“须要”的地方，都可以用“需要”来替换；而使用“需要”的地方，却不一定能用“须要”来替换。
