I can think of other Japs story translated into Chinese and very popular - 佐贺的超级阿嬷 and 导盲犬小Q. I have not read these books but according to dd, they are very interesting and touching.
My dd's P6 teacher also recommends this book 佐贺的超级阿嬷 to the class. It is from the same publisher as 窗前的小豆豆. I have read 佐贺的超级阿嬷 myself from her and my dd also finds it interesting. However, she has not got the chance to read 窗前的小豆豆. Heard that the original Jap version of 窗前的小豆豆 is more interesting than the eng version of Totto Chan? Will get her to read 导盲犬小Q. Thank you for sharing.

I went to Popular today and couldn’t find 窗前的小豆豆。Where do you find such books?

Did you ask them? I remember seeing it before.

I believe this is an abridged version because it is quite short, you can get to read it here first if you still cannot get the book:

Just my little suggestion, maybe mathspark can change the title of this thread to Sec 1 - Chinese since I don't see any thread related to Chinese and we can also help each other on this area. I leave the decision to mathspark.
Thanks daisyt for your suggestion. Have renamed and stickied. Looking at the results of the survey made me feel so 惭愧 😞

I didn't ask them. Popular was quite crowded on Sunday. Many kiasu parents were there to buy assessment books for upcoming CA. 😄 I was one of them but 顺便 check out the story books. And you perceived correctly that I wanted to take a look first. Second World War stories tend to be melancholy, miserable and sad, that's why I was hesitant even though it was highly recommended.

Thanks for the URL. I read the first chapter briefly and have already found funny moments. Quite tickled by her original ambition to be a spy versus a ticket inspector.

Thanks for the information. I will try asking Popular first, but now I have a backup plan to get DD to enlist her RV friend's assistance.

Hi SoWoW, I have 新世纪高级汉语词典 but it's not specific to 成语。 I go online nowadays. Some URLs I use are as follows.

                      http://tool.httpcn.com/ChengYu/
                      http://www.chazidian.com/cy/
                      http://www.zdic.net/cy/

For the 3 URLs above, you can also check 字 and 词 besides 成语。The URLs I have given leads you directly to 成语, but just click on 字典 or 词典 at the page to check word or phrase accordingly.

For generic search, I would use
                      http://dict.youdao.com/
                      http://www.iciba.com/

                        Hi Mintleaf,

thanks thanks, you are so resourceful.

Parents here, do you coach your Sec one chinese or outsource?
I do not think he has the time to go for any chinese tuition, am planning to do the revision with him at home. Anyone doing home coaching, can share how do u do it? What are the assessment books that u will recommend?
