TT tan:
Are you an alumni from Phase 2A(1), Rosyth ?
I didn't know we can approach the p for such information.
I find not publishing PSLE scores by moe also has the down side like not having enough information for parents to make decision.
As much as it may create elistist attitude, not publishing PSLE scores may also make some parents hold on to wrong perception that xx school is still branded while many neighbourshood could infact be generating higher median scores....
My kid is not in roysth yet.
Thinking of enrolling in July, therefore I have so many questions now ....
If Yes, can join in one of the alumni meetings :-
speak to Principal + your senior with older P5 / P6 pupils, inside.
Normally, P is present at these meeting.
P will usually chair the meeting first, before pass over to the alumni Head Officer in charge, at an appropriate time.
You can mingle around, get to know your seniors, ask them any concern that you have. You talk to a few parents there, they will be able to provide you the Truth. Don't just talk to one parent, in case their view is biased.
Talk to more parents.
That is what an alumni is for.
If you've any concern, they are on hand, to help you, ESP. When you've doubts & queries. Clarify through your alumni.
They provide the best channel source of info you need.
Since you are registering for coming July P1 registration :-
Encourage you to enrol your child into Rosyth first.
First 2 years of lower primary in any school -
The curriculum is more or less the same, wherever you go.
Example
English : every primary school follow Stellar English curriculum, standard same worksheets are used.
Chinese : every primary school teach Han Yu pin yin, for first half of the year.
P1 Term 3 & 4 (second half of the year), more vocab, more sentence construction, do some simple \"look at picture & do simple zao Ju\".
P2 Term 1: start very simple Chinese picture composition, in short paragraph.
Maths : every primary school teach basic counting, + - within 100.
And include some simple multiplication.
When your child reach P3 :-
If he manage to clear 2 round of GEP tests & you prefer \"All Boys\" school (eg : Catholic High or ACS) or SAP school (eg : Tao Nan or Nanyang), then transfer him accordingly.
Meanwhile, during these 2 years P1 and P2 :
you'll have more than sufficient time to find out in detail about Rosyth, since your child already studying inside.
Do not act rashly.
It is getting more & more difficult & competitive to get in, via Phase 2C.
It is still a blessing to be able to enter Rosyth, under Phase 2A.
Just to share -
Many of my friends are hanging onto Phase 2A schools, even though they may stay > 2 km.
Some parents in Phase 2C will be glad that you won't enrol, so that one more space is made available. -

Not quite sure, but I know that between the GEP classes, the next 2 best classes and the rest..there are 3 different book lists...Dandelion76:
Yes. I realised the Rosyth syllabus for science is different, but I have gotten my son used to studying both the school text as well as some other more mainstream textbooks & assessment books... Steadily improved from 60+ to 80+ this year alone
Hi dlye,
Do u know y is there a different from other school?
I suppose they do teach to a specific differentiated level
Hmm ... there are different book lists?
I seriously hope Rosyth does not neglect the \"rest\"
May I know if there are any parents with kids/students who are able to share if being in the classes other than the GEP and top 2 classes get equal \"pushing\" from the teachers? -
TT tan,
I have nothing to do with Rosyth but I had chanced upon this thread and I fully understand your apprehension and uncertainties. In fact, I am like you - question a lot about unfamiliar ground, and I think that your worries and questions are valid, so I would like to offer you my two cents.
If I were you, if I don’t have a better choice, I would enrol my child at Rosyth. I am not sure about you but even 2A2 makes me very worried and nervous. I can’t imagine having to get out into that 2C battlefield and fight tooth and nail into a decent school. In fact, even many neighbourhood schools that do not have lousy reputation see balloting. I think my old heart cannot take this kind of stress.
I had a colleague whose son was in Rosyth. She’s one disgruntled parent of Rosyth. She felt that the school only focused on the good classes. But honestly, most schools do that.
Most schools that have gep classes depend on these classes to garner a good percentage of 250 and above. It’s not just Rosyth alone. And it’s inevitable.
It’s good that you question all these. It shows that you are an enlightened parent, but unless you really hate the school or have a better choice, I would say enrol your child in the school. A school with parents fighting to get their kids into is an indication that the parents are more likely to support the kids in their studies. It makes for a better environment generally. -

Hi TT tan, I'm surprised to hear that Rosyth gave very high standard work. So far from what I know, compared to my friend's children studying in Taonan, Maha Bodhi, Haig girls and st Margeret, Roysth is not giving as much homework as other schools. Even the show n tell is relatively easy to score. My friend told me 听写for Maha Bodhi is from, Eg.page 5-10, teacher will pick any words from these pages(P1 student). If you go thru d pass year exam papers, they are not as tough as other branded school liked NY, RGPS, etc..
Maybe be cause many of. My friends who have kids from top schools say that most of these are not really top schools apart from gep. Results are so so as teachers don't teach. So I am rather concern as I am new to this primary school environment.
And you are right, I do ask a lot of questions and hope to find out more so that I can make the best decision for my child based on the limited information we have. We don't take take the plunge and say all the best to our kids for the next six years. So far I have only spoken to one parent with kid from roysth 2 weeks ago and she says the kid is struggling with all the homework and school gives ridiculously high standard of work, not that the kid is stupid but because they are tested on things that are not taught. She concluded that if the kid is not in gep then will end up average .. Unless your family comes from super rich background that can afford tuition for all subjects and super duper enrichment class. Like I mentioned before another friend told me his kid in xx branded school is also hearsay. End of the day is a competition of who can afford better tuition or quality enrichment, is a game for the rich....
Imagine if you are in my position as a new parent,.... Would be quite uncertain after hearing from these friends right... But you are right also to say would I be stupid to give up a place in a branded school when everyone is fighting to go in... Is a tough decision to make... Unlike choosing for a childcare you can go in, talk to teachers, observe the environment, etc... Primary schools are close doors.... Can't really talk to school, or go in to see, etc.. So just got to depend on word of mouth
My DS is P3 now, doesn't attend any tuitions for any subjects, she only goes for Chinese Speech n Drama performances. Yet she's doing well in Rosyth(top 2classes).
My niece from Rosyth scored 262marks for last yr 2013PSLE. She's not in GEP class.
My nephew from Catholic High,he was in GEP class, scored oso 262 marks for PSLE.
So I think very much still depends on the kids themselves, how motivated and driven they r. There r no prefect schools and prefect systems! Not to worry too much, as a parent most important is to b there to give guidance, support and encouragement. I believe yr child will be just fine! -

I couldnt agree more. -

If you're phrase 2A, this is my take:
It's very tough, almost next to impossible to transfer into a GEP school (Rosyth, RGPS, Nanyang, & similar) from another school subsequently. The only two point of entry is P1 registration and GEP at p4.
My neighbour's ds is among top 10 in standard in his neighbourhood school for 3 consecutive years. His mom waitlist him at one of the GEP schools but to no avail
So I would think it's easier to transfer out from Roysth (or any other GEP schools) if parents decided subsequently child is not thriving in a GEP school
but way way harder to transfer in, even if child has good results from another school
By the way, I'm not implying other schools are easy to transfer in. Only talking from comparative vacancies view point -
Thank you all for the information. Maybe I am worrying too much..... Is a comfort to hear the examples from ur children n friends.

I am trying to explore the sch bus options. Does RPS has sch bus services from the Pro teach, student care?
If kids are having CCA, and without studentcare, are there buses at a later timing?
I stay in SK, wonder how are the morning hours to wait for the sch bus. -
The GEP students will obviously get pushed further, because that is, after all, the purpose of GEP.
But it depends on what you want for your child- to receive a well-rounded holistic education or simply, to do well in PSLE. If it is the latter, then a mainstream student will certainly get more training than a GEP pupil.
GEP pupils do things outside the curriculum, like writing a mystery short story, writing commentaries, and they even include SS as a subject. They also have thought provoking questions and learn say permutation for math. They only start actual preparation for PSLE when they are halfway through their P6 year.
Mainstream pupils, on the other hand, start preparation when they are P5. They receive many practice papers to do. And if they wish to be stretched further, you always have the academic CCAs like Debate (that Rosyth excels in), Chinese Ambassador Club, E2K (Science)etc..
It is a misconception that only GEP pupils are pushed. Mainstream pupils get pushed too, and the teachers do put in a lot of effort to train them.
Essentially, it is up to your child and you as a parent. Training your child is also a parent's responsibility, not just the school's, and I'm pretty sure it's what this entire website was created for.
