Agree. My niece who graduated from pat school house was not well prepared for p1. Math and life skills not good. They keep playing in pat end up cannot cope with the discipline and rigour of the system in p1. My niece cannot even spell simple words when she entered p1. But she was good in song and dance which probably what they so alot in childcare
Another bad thing is that pat keep increasing school fees

RE: Pat's Schoolhouse
Standard of pat school house in general has dropped. Management seems more interested in money rather than the welfare of children. Although some teachers are good, the premium paid may not match up as there are much more options now with the same price. Also notice that their enrolment is not as full as in the past.

RE: Small Wonder Preschool @ Blk 348 Yishun Ave 11
Appleworm:
My child was enrolled in small wonder serangoon. The experience was horrible. I went in to observe for few days and found many unhygienic practises. The China teachers simply passed the toys from one child to another, letting the infants crawl outside the mat and suck on the floors!! The floor was quite dirty and teachers were walking with slippers. I also saw some teachers very rough in handling the children. Crawlers and walkers who do not want to eat on high chairs be scolded and threatened. The teachers be shoving porridge in the mouths of lined up kids like factory one after another. I saw kids perpetually crying. Those who cannot walk or crawl were most poor thing. I saw one baby girl just placed on a pillow lying there staring at ceiling for hours. After I came back from lunch the baby was still lying there staring at ceiling alone. When I saw the father at pick up time i wanted to tell the dad if he knows his child has been left alone there for hours just sucking on her pacifer. I also saw babies sleeping all alone in the cots in the room by themselves with no teacher supervision which is totally dangerous. I asked the teacher why no supervision. She said we can hear from outside if baby wakes up. What rubbish!!! When so many babies were crying and brawling outside. Probably If baby died inside no one will know. By the way the centre has just been issued by moh for mass hfmd. Put your child there at your own risk !!I STRONGLY do not recommend u to play ur kiddos in this childcare.
The principal is really not the hands on type who does not work with the parents to deliver the best for their child.please do not leave them in their care. In my opinion they are not patient & definitely unprofessional educators in terms of managing the kids.
Crap school really. . -
RE: Rosyth
Thank you all for the information. Maybe I am worrying too much..... Is a comfort to hear the examples from ur children n friends.
scotia:
Hi TT tan, I'm surprised to hear that Rosyth gave very high standard work. So far from what I know, compared to my friend's children studying in Taonan, Maha Bodhi, Haig girls and st Margeret, Roysth is not giving as much homework as other schools. Even the show n tell is relatively easy to score. My friend told me 听写for Maha Bodhi is from, Eg.page 5-10, teacher will pick any words from these pages(P1 student). If you go thru d pass year exam papers, they are not as tough as other branded school liked NY, RGPS, etc..TT tan:
Maybe be cause many of. My friends who have kids from top schools say that most of these are not really top schools apart from gep. Results are so so as teachers don't teach. So I am rather concern as I am new to this primary school environment.
And you are right, I do ask a lot of questions and hope to find out more so that I can make the best decision for my child based on the limited information we have. We don't take take the plunge and say all the best to our kids for the next six years. So far I have only spoken to one parent with kid from roysth 2 weeks ago and she says the kid is struggling with all the homework and school gives ridiculously high standard of work, not that the kid is stupid but because they are tested on things that are not taught. She concluded that if the kid is not in gep then will end up average .. Unless your family comes from super rich background that can afford tuition for all subjects and super duper enrichment class. Like I mentioned before another friend told me his kid in xx branded school is also hearsay. End of the day is a competition of who can afford better tuition or quality enrichment, is a game for the rich....
Imagine if you are in my position as a new parent,.... Would be quite uncertain after hearing from these friends right... But you are right also to say would I be stupid to give up a place in a branded school when everyone is fighting to go in... Is a tough decision to make... Unlike choosing for a childcare you can go in, talk to teachers, observe the environment, etc... Primary schools are close doors.... Can't really talk to school, or go in to see, etc.. So just got to depend on word of mouth
My DS is P3 now, doesn't attend any tuitions for any subjects, she only goes for Chinese Speech n Drama performances. Yet she's doing well in Rosyth(top 2classes).
My niece from Rosyth scored 262marks for last yr 2013PSLE. She's not in GEP class.
My nephew from Catholic High,he was in GEP class, scored oso 262 marks for PSLE.
So I think very much still depends on the kids themselves, how motivated and driven they r. There r no prefect schools and prefect systems! Not to worry too much, as a parent most important is to b there to give guidance, support and encouragement. I believe yr child will be just fine! -

you may ask your school Principal in detail, to show you how the Mainstream itself alone performed (strip off those 2 GEP classes), for past 3 years PSLE 2011 to 2013 batch :-
Total number of students sat for PSLE, in that year.
- % of pupils scored above 260,
- % of pupils scored above 250,
- % of pupils scored 240 to 249.
- % of pupils scored 230 to 239.
- % of pupils scored 220 to 229.
from these % figures & the Total number of pupils sat for exam per batch -
you can calculate backwards the actual number of students, falling within each range.
from the % figures -
you can also tell where are majority of Mainstream Rosyth pupils falling into which range of T-score ?
No doubt below 250 cannot enter \"IP\" Secondary 1 schools :-
But there are some Secondary schools around, with good \"O\" level track.
(If T score below 250)
Normally, Principal of Rosyth school will inform Upper primary P5 / P6 parents + pupils how the school performed, during some parents' school meeting.
Lower primary : P may or may not disclose.
Maybe can request P to breakdown info into Mainstream alone vs. GEP students alone.
You may approach either P or VP, for more info.
(should be able to obtain info, since you're already an existing parent of Rosyth.
As parent of Rosyth, you've the right to know. Not for outsiders.
This apply not only to Rosyth.
Every parent whose child is studying in their respective primary school -
ought to know how their own school performed.
Particularly those studying : P4 to P6)
Tt Tan,
I agree with you, share the same concern as you.
Due to presence of GEP students, the results might have been camoflauged.
In fact, parents are more concerned with Mainstream.
Because GEP only 2 classes. Max only around 50 students, each GEP class around 25.
But how many P6 Mainstream classes in Rosyth ?
definitely exceed 2 classes, & don't forget one Mainstream class got around 40 students ?
size of one Mainstream class already far exceed that of one GEP class.
the majority, or the bulk of it, are still the Mainstream students.
I mean ... If my child is not a Gepper, shouldn't I be more concerned with how the teachers teach Mainstream ?
Parents from other GEP centre(s), do share the same concern, as you.
So don't be afraid.
Just approach your P politely, for data.
Thank you for your advice. I didn't know we can approach the p for such information. I find not publishing PSLE scores by moe also has the down side like not having enough information for parents to make decision. As much as it may create elistist attitude, not publishing PSLE scores may also make some parents hold on to wrong perception that xx school is still branded while many neighbourshood could infact be generating higher median scores....
My kid is not in roysth yet. Thinking of enrolling in July, therefore I have so many questions now .... -

Dear TT Tan, this is not the first time you have been asking questions abt Rosyth n the impression that I got is you think Rosyth is not a good enuf school for you although many of us have already assured you based on our own personal experiences.
I can see that you strongly believe all the negative comments that you have received from your friends n sources without any concrete evidence.
May I suggest that you start looking at other schools that you deemed not to be a neighbourhood school but produces only top students (as that seems to be your primary concern while looking for a primary school for your child).
Sorry for being so blunt n no offence is intended.

RE: any good pre school student care to recommend in hougang?
baby princess:
My kid going to hips any good recommendations?
I went to pro teach two branches to observe as I was thinkin of placing my DS there, I noticed:
1. Children were not really doing their work. Many were playing with their pencil boxes, drawing rubbish on papers, flipping pencils, etc. girls were chatting instead of doing their work
2. Teachers were oblivious to children behavior. THEy were just answering one or two kids queuing up to ask questions.
3. Some boys were dashing in and out of classrooms. They were going toilets frequently and laughing and joking outside class. Again teachers didn't bother.
4. When I ask the teachers. One school said oh... So happen they are changing periods. I visited the centre three times and so coincidental? Then I ask another school teacher, she said, we are here to help in school work, we are not childcare teachers.... I was like.... Huh... BUT they are not even doing their work....
So sometimes parents may not see full picture unless we really stay n see what teachers are doin
I urge parents if you feel lack of options plus write to ministry. I wrote to moe but nothing been done. Hopefully as more parents feedback they will build more and better after schools are for full time working parents. -

Having the child in a student care service may not benefit the parents if the student care centre in primary schools close on days when schools close such as PSLE marking day. This is enough to put me off.
Karen_Wee:
I had a frustrating experience with Pro-Tech After School Care in Horizon Primary School. From my last encounter with the centre principal, i figured that the demand for their centre is so good that they can make thoughtless decision. Take it or leave it. Inflexible, high-handed and lack of planning. If you are in their waiting list, you can wait forever unless someone drops out. No point appealing no matter how desperate you are. You can also forget about calling their HQ as they will just refer your feedback back to the respective centres.
Since they decided to accept only one of out my TWO children studying in the school, i've decided to withdraw my application for the one accepted by the centre because it makes no sense for me.
For those parents who consider school based care centres, I noticed that Pro-Tech Centre closes when the school close (eg. PSLE marking day, special school events etc). I thought that's when we need the centre for - to take care of our children when there's no school during school term.
Furthermore, Students are to wait in school canteen after say 5pm and outside the school after 6.30pm with one centre staff. So for parents who knock off at 6pm and takes more than half hour travel time, do take that into consideration.

anxious.dad:
Thanks for the response. So few make it to top schools then I wonder where the top students come from as the top sec schools do have a sizable number of sec one classes.Hi TT Tan
I do not have the statistics for Rosyth and would not be able to comment on the performance of Rosyth.
However, I would like to share my opinions pertaining to your questions.
1. Students making it to nygh, rgs, ri will require a minimum tscore of 259 (base on 2013 PSLE), 1 point above the EESIS for that year. EESIS is generally believed to be awarded to the top 3% of the cohort, as such students that could make it to the three schools that you mentioned are deemed to be within the top 3% of their cohort. GEP students are generally believed to be the top 1~1.5% of their cohort base on the P3 selection test.
Assuming the GEP students have maintained their performance, hence, theoretically only 1.5% ~2% of the mainstream cohort will enter the three schools that you have mentioned. Taking a cohort size of 310 (360 - 50 GEP) students, 2% will be equivalent to 6.2 students. So, if more than 6 students from Rosyth mainstream enter the three said schools base on 2013 PSLE, then Rosyth would have performed better than the average schools. On the other hand, not all top students will choose to go to these three schools.
2. PSLE tscore range, I believe no school ever disclose the range especially since 2012 when the schools stop publishing their top scorer. For your info, the PSLE median scores range between 160 and 240 for the 2012 batch (mainstream), disclosed in a reply by Mr Heng to Mr Hri Kumar Nair.
http://www.straitstimes.com/microsites/ ... 7-20130205
(/microsites/parliament/story/psle-median-scores-range-between-160-and-247-20130205)
To me, a tscore of between 230-240 is commendable and is within the top 30% of the cohort though this score could not land the student in an IP school.
