2014 P1 Registration Exercise for 2015 In-Take
-
rains:
P1 and P2 may be honeymoon years.
P1 to P3 are chicken feed. Not to worry.
But for some children, they may struggle even in P1.
Eg : to some short attention span children, who can't sit still in class, or tend to day dream in class.
P3 also may not be easy.
Science is a new subject.
Chinese Compo (zuo wen) may also be tough, for some kids.
ESP. Those who seldom read Chinese storybooks, in their spare time.
Some don't even know how to write a 80 words (minimum ) zuo wen picture Compo. Because they don't read Chinese novels often, or maybe they find Chinese dry, not so keen.
P3 Maths modeling questions -
May also pose a challenge, who have difficulty in \"seeing\" it.
Or child trying to visualize, trying to draw out the model, trying to interpret facts given by the qn, trying to fit in the pieces of info given by the question, here & there, as best as I can ?
Eg : here : how many units should i put, after draw out the model ?
there : how many units did the question tell us ?
Or if child get stuck solving by model way, is there another way out ? -
phtthp:
Totally agree. For CL compo, they have to memorise so many phrases and paras (starting, ending etc) and their spelling (tingxie) is also not easy, got lengthy dictation (mo xie).

Maths requires so many skills and focus/attention/diligent in order not to be careless, traps everywhere in the questions. One word, tough. Sigh. I have learned so much in the journey of going through it all with my son. It's SO SO different from my times in the 80s. -
kylene:
even before your son enter P1 -
That's why I've been trying to get a feel of my DS's ability vs the school's standard, which is proving to be quite difficult .
you can gauge his ability, vs. Pei Hwa primary (PHPS) school standard.
(2008 born children now already reach mid K2, not beginning K2:
can start to practise P1 Mock papers)
can start with the most recent 2013 P1 Maths Test papers, from PHPS.
for a start, type in selection criteria -
Year = All
Subject = Maths
Type = All
School = Pei Hwa
click <Show Test Papers>
the whole list of Past year papers appear, one by one.
download one by one, store into your C drive
http://www.java-samples.com/testpapers/ ... est+Papers
Ask him to practise 1 set, first.
Tell him each Maths paper is 1 hour duration.
Train him to work independently, under Test condition.
Tell your son -
when 1 hour is up, you're going to collect his paper, and mark.
In short, macro manage him.
Not micro manage - like sit right beside him at the desk, not hand hold him, for every paper.
And whenever he don't know how to do certain questions, he turn to you (parent) automatically, seek help \"Mummy / Papa, I don't know how to do this ? \" No, don't do this.
Tell him : must try to attempt every question, on his own, independently.
do not leave any question, unattempted.
encourage him : \"Try your best\"
after he finish the Paper -
train him to check all the answers, one by one.
Check every page, at least minimal 2 round.
This is to train him discipline, early from young.
If your son start right from the beginning, he'll end up right.
but if he start wrong - is very hard, to unlearn the wrong things.
Maths is a subject that require focus, full concentration, discipline, & overcome the bad habit of carelessess.
Carelessness is a culprit that can pull your child down, right down from Band 1, into Band 2.
So, beware of carelessness.
Kick this bad habit of carelessness, if your child has.
When you mark his paper -
you'll be able to tell : where are his weak areas ?
identify them, early.
Example
for CA1 paper : you can tell, from his Paper done :-
is it Number bonds he don't know, don't quite understand ?
or is it Addition / Subtraction within 10 - he doesn't understand ?
or is it Shapes & Pattern ?
or is it Ordinal Numbers (Position ) ?
once you identify his weak spot(s) -
then you let him practise more, ie. zoom in onto his weak areas, so as to help him \"bring up the gear\", to the standard expected in Pei Hwa Primary.
you may next buy this P1 assessment book entitled \"Topical Maths\", by EPH
In Popular bookshop, there are so many books around
(eyes can go blur)
This \"Topical Maths\" assessment book is good -
because it can help your son practise to target his weak areas, hence helping him to improve.
If your child has short attention span, or can't focus -
all the more parents have to try to re-solve this early, train your child early.
In Mainstream schools -
the Principal hope to see every child enrolled inside the school: to succeed, from P1 to P6.
if your child study in Montessori kindergarten -
he should be able to handle P1 Maths; because Montessori Maths curriculum would have taught them concepts, some up to P2 level.
(assuming your child started Montessori Maths, since N2 Nursery) -
phtthp:
Hi, the post is very interesting. However, not every child is ready to tackle primary 1 test papers at K2 level. The foundation for the Maths syllabus should be strong at K2 level, not whether the child can do P1 test papers or not. The interest to learn Math should be there. There are k2 assessment books that provide a good depth of the P1 syllabus. I like EPH K2 assessments. Parents can start off from assessment books first, not from Pri 1 test papers directly.

My child has not practised any top school math test papers yet but her understanding of the math topic is very strong, especially for Heuristic questions. Parents should not be drilling children to do Math papers if the child does not understand. Math is about how much you understand.
Thanks phtthp for the interesting post. :please: -
Hi I’m thinking of trying Aitong for phase 2C (within 1 km). If I didn’t get the ballot, I will have to go to 2c sup? What Sch are there left for me that do not have so many foreigners? Appreciate advice. Thanks!

Foreigners will be eligible to enrol in Phase 3.
Since you are staying in Bishan, you can consider Guangyang Primary as your back up. -

Err... that should be the only choice left for Bishan. It's either that or schools in AMK.peobe:

If I want to enrol my boy in Saint Joseph jr and I’m staying in punggol means I have to have a back up school that is within 2km within my home?
2C: Saint Joseph jr. If I can’t get the ballot means I will have to settle for Horizon primary in punggol? -
is it a MUST to let my child complete the FULL recommended vaccine before entry into P1?
I just tally my immunisation history record with the recommended link below and found that my child is missing on MMR(D2##), PCV (D2) and PCV(B1).
Is it a must to complete the 3 prior to registration or entry to P1?
