      stuckinratio:
      Hi maths guru,

      have this q

      The no of cakes was twice the no of cream puffs. After 90 cakes and 42 cream puffs were sold, the ratio of the no of cakes left to the no of cream puffs was 2:5. How many cakes and cream puffs were in the shop at first?

      TIA

      (oops- new to this and posted a new thread instead -sorrieee)
      Is there something wrong to this question?
      I tried using modeling, then I tried solving with algebra.
      Both times I can't get a nice round answer.
      Cake = 91.5; cream puff = 45.75

      However, if I reverse the condition to no. of cream puffs was twice the no. of cakes, then final answer is cake 366, cream puffs 732.

        Hi BigDevil

        The original question is likely to be flawed.

        You are now emerging into a confident new breed problem solver ready to run the next lap.

        We look forward to more of your solutions.

        Best wishes

            Hi BigDevil

            If you feel that I am making fun of you, I sincerely apologise.

            I am no expert, just a dad who is thick skinned enough to put my solutions online. For a forum to be vibrant, we need more new problem solvers who are ready to inject new ideas. The intention of my earlier post is to encourage more active participation from new problem solvers.

            Best wishes

              Hi guys, when I did the cream puff cake question, I got 66.5 cakes, 33.25 cream puffs. Could you explain, BigDevil or Tianzhu? Thanks…

                Hi Muffins

                I am inclined to believe that the original question is flawed.

                This question can be solved with MD or Parts and Units.But the answers are not in whole numbers.

                Maybe, we should wait for the reply from the TS.

                Best wishes

                  Oh no no no tianzhu, no apologies needed!
                  I'm actually quite flattered!

                  But I know I'm still far from the likes of yourself, Dharma, and mathsguru after seeing the solutions you guys came up with.

                  That's why I so :oops:

                  But don't worry...I will also be thick-skinned and continue posting my solutions. I believe working them out is the best way to learn.

                  :celebrate:

                    Hi Muffins, if your number of cake is 66.5, then you wouldn't be able to sell 90 pieces of it as stated in the question.

                    But like what tianzhu said, the question should be flawed. So don't crack your head over it. 😄

                      Oh ya... never thought of that, thanks BigDevil! 😄 BTW, I just added you onto my buddylist! 😄 Well, OK, I won't crack my head over it (maybe fracture it a little :D)

                        Hi, thanks for all you guys for trying. I copied the q from my girl P6 worksheet. I was also stuck and not able to get the ans.

                        now waiting for the school to return the worksheet.
                        kindly help check if the logic below is correct.

                        After:
                        cake
                        [u][u]

                        cream puff

                        [u][u][u][u][u]

                        before

                        [u][u][45][45]

                        [u][u][u][u][u][42]

                        [u][45]=[u][u][u][u][u][42] 2:1

                        4u=3 ?????
