when I had maid back then, I kept up all my corelle bowls/plates.Any of you read yesterday newspaper, about Nation want to train some of their maids to know about champagne glasses and how to serve wine etc.. I find it silly .. what more are we expecting from our maids ? normally we want maid, can cook, can look after children ,can clean ..
Employers can you all share what skills you wished your maid had :
at the rate they vent frustrations (for reasons unknown) on cutlery, I will have to put up with chipped bowls.
I want my maid to learn simple English in order to communicate, willing to cook and do housework. that's why you hiring them for. -

Nothing silly. Not every FDW employer is a heartlander with infants, sch-gg children or sickly old folks at home.Any of you read yesterday newspaper, about Nation want to train some of their maids to know about champagne glasses and how to serve wine etc.. There're many who play host to respectable guests every week at their bungalows that come with a wine cellar at the basement. Those multi-millionaire hosts would either cater atas buffet from hotels, or they would hire a chef to cook for their guests with the help of their FDWs.
MOst of the time, such hosts will hire part-time male butlers to help uncork champagne /wine bottles and pour into Christofle glasses for the guests. They will help to cut ham/roast beef, etc. Part-time butlers will need to wear tuxedo for your info. Because the butler hourly rates are getting higher, many of them are looking at hiring multi-skilled FDWs such as those Nation is training. Their FDWs will need to don chambermaid uniforms too.
My Filipino helper told me she used to work for a wealthy Filipino Chinese family in Makati, Manila before coming to Singapore. She was required to lay Western cutlery and dinnerware in their proper position before every meal, i.e. placement, napkin rings, charger plate + dinner plate + bowl, etc.
But over here, Singaporean employers are not so particular abt table etiquette. Everyone just eats off Ikea plates or plastic boxes with disposable chopsticks sometimes. No need to wash... -
here in Singapore, we want maids to do the norm…kids, aged, housework…but in rich families, they are expected to do other stuff…not an ordinary 阿四. uncle’s friend has an expensive coffee maker machine…maid is expected to know how to use that machine to make expresso for eg and serve in the right cups. rich families have more than 1 maid in the household…these maids have to know how to set tables esp if their employers are ambassadors and have frequent parties.

What is wine glass, or champagne glass, how to make latte, or cappuccino, what kind of glassware to serve what in, all these I can teach them when they come.
What I need, cannot be taught, it is either she has it or not. She must have a good attitude and be willing to learn. She must also have some initiative. Most importantly, she must not be afraid of cockroaches and must be able to catch them and get rid of them. -

First and foremost, honour the agreement to work, following instructions. It’s no rocket science.
We pay for the SIP, they have an idea what is expected. They are told during interview what is expected and involved.
I think it’s just publicity for the agency mentioned, to charge a higher rate for maids that are trained in this area and for the maids to “aspired to” a better job, maybe can meet high class boyfriend?? otherwise it’s a dead end job working. Must be the Downton Abbey fever!!
What’s the max number of maids a household can employ, 2? When you have such dinner parties, some one still has to clean the mess, wash the glassware and polish the silver too! Someone still has to clean the house, wash the toilet, do the laundery everyday, cook and go marketing!
I’m sure the current maids in these types of households are already taught what to do, do they have to paid extra? It’s absurd. -
I think the plus point is that the maid is trained by someone else and comes ready to do the tasks.

It just depends on the family’s personal needs. If the family happens to be rich, by all means, train their maids to clean chandeliers and polish the silver. In a similar vein, families who have sick elderly folk who require baths and constant bed cleaning will require maids that are trained in such care, with the patience and willingness to administer care for the weak.
