Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)

Perhaps i can share this with you. My DS2 is currently in P2. End of last year, I received a call from his MTL teacher. She recommended that I put him in higher MTL this year based on his results. Though his result was not among the best but decent enough for him to go for higher MTL. Without giving much thought, I rejected the idea straightaway. Eventually, I decided to opt for higher chinese, not becos I want him to go to SAP school or get good results but really to LEARN and LOVE the chinese language.

Two months have passed, I can see that the pace that the teacher is going is very very fast, at least too fast for me to catch up. However, what surprised me was that DS2 is coping pretty well even with the extra Tingxie. I am amazed when he was able to do his \"Hao Peng You\" all by himself with minimum help and with minimum mistakes. Of course, it helps that he has a good MTL teacher and he does not hate chinese.

So the moral of the story is that we do not know what is the child's limit until we let him try. You may be surprised that he can do much better that you expect. As long as he does not show strong resistance to the language, it is worthwhile to let him carry on. [/quote][/quote]

yes, no doubt if he can qualify for higher chinese, i will let him try. but i do not want it to be a case of he-can-only-qualify-cos-of-the-enrichment i sent him to or that he-can-qualify-but-still-need-enrichment-to-stay-afloat kind of situation.

Just my 2cents worth :
If he is not in a SAP primary school, the school will 'recommend' whether he will or will not take HMT in P5, based on his P1-P4 performance. If he indeed developed strength in the subject and the school recommends HMT, let him try and review again at end of P5. Most of the parents go this route.

I guess your point is to stop the enrichment and see if he can make HMT by P5 on his own. I think this depends on your assessment whether the enrichment is adding any value to his learning of the subject. Even with enrichment, it is not guarantee the child can make HMT, right ?

Subject-based banding ie standard versus foundation usually applies to the other 3Core subjects.

As for benefit of doing HMT in primay school, besides apply for SAP secondary school, there is also the longer term impact of secondary->JC admission (minus 2 points for HMT).
