Raffles Girls' Primary
-
justmummy90:
True, very little homework.
I personally feel that our girls at P1 and P2 girls have very, very little homework or none.xuanting:
what's the workload (homework) for p1 like?
do they have weekly spelling and tingxie and how many words/sentences are these like?
my friends keep telling me that rgps is academically very rigorous and i should be prepared to send my child for all kinds of enrichment if i decide to try to send her there.
Frankly, my friends' kids in neighborhood schools had much more homework than my girl in P1 and their spelling list or ting xie were tougher
Last year, my P1 girl hardly had homework.
Every Math chapter, there is only one set of supplementary worksheets.
Definitely not academically rigorous
(as xuanting's friends described, frightened her)
Even now P1 Term 3 (Semester 2) : (one more Term will be Term 4)
only the usual weekly English spelling, Chinese tingxie.
Once a while, bring home Maths Supplementary worksheets to do.
But questions simple : those basic Maths stuff that every P1 child ought to know.
So K2 parents -
no need to waste $, send your kids to those expensive, high end enrichment classes like TLL, like what some parents in other primary schools are doing.
The common P1 Assesment books which you see in Popular bookshops like EPH \"P1 Maths Drill\", or Simon Eio \"Step by Step\" or Casco P1 Maths standard, are good enough for extra practice at home.
Because most of the time, our P1 pupils use \"My Pals are here\" worksheets, to practise in class.
The Maths Test questions set in each Term are what most P1 kids \"ought to know\" in general.
during recent PMT in June (at end of Term 2) -
heard that majority of our P1 students in the nine P1 classes got band 1, for overall 3 subjects. (English, Maths, Chinese)
Some parents here try to hold back tuition for their dd, for as long as they can.
They said is better that children try to learn on their own, through reading up more and discovering things, on their own initiative.
The other day, one parent commented that sometimes too much tuition no good : because the child can become \" numb\" towards learning.
And also if rely on too much on tuition, sometimes the child don't know how to study on her own, if left on her own.
out of 3 subjects :
maybe Chinese is the common subject that most parents here tend to send kids for tuition.
Because our girls seldom converse in Mandarin, apart from attending Chinese lessons. -
tlc:
We can only predict ...
Not to worry, within 1km with so many vacancies, your place is confirmedEunice72:
Within 1km to rgps. Currently registered under 2b in another school.
Keeping fingers crossed we can get in to rgps smoothly.... Been planning for that since earlier the yr.
Hope with the no of vacancies this yr we stand a good chance.
The population density that stretch of dunearn road is not high.
That with 102 vacancies for p2C : SC less than 1 km, should be safe
Within 1 km from Hillcrest are condo / landed property, no HDB flats around.
Most likely SC > 2 km ballot
This year :
Many SC > 2 km will be on standby, looking at the numbers, at the last hour on Friday.
If SC > 2 km have a backup Phase 2C Supplementary school in mind, they are prepared to withdraw from Phase 1 / 2A / 2B : fight for a chance to get in, through balloting.
And if SC > 2 km have grandparents staying less than 1 km from Hillcrest, they will use SD to register, enabling them to fall under less than 2 km, instead.
SC > 2 km
Do Not Action, Do Not Withdraw on first two days of p2C.
Hang on tightly to your Phase 1 / 2A / 2B, for as long as you can.
Let all those staying less than 1 km, or within 2 km register first, on the first 2 days (wed and thurs)
Monitor the numbers closely at night for first 2 days, when MOE release the numbers at night after 8.30 pm.
On the last day (Friday) by 3.30 pm, come down Rgps yourself, monitor situation \"live\". The numbers expected to jump.
Because it is not just a target eyed by SC > 2 km (including From Henry Park and Pei Hwa), but it is also a rescue school to run for refuge, for parents with daughters staying within 2 km from (Nanyang, MGS, SCGS), if too risky for them. -
Thanks for all your comments and advice.

phtthp, you have a PM.

Thank phtthp very much for providing such valuable information and analysis.
I live within 1km distance for RGPS and NYPS. I am keen to NYPS but the chance for 2C enrollment is quite low.
Some suggestions from my peers is to take a risk to register at NYPS for 2C and back to RGPS for 2CS if it is not successful at 2C in NYPS.
Based on your information and analysis, I will go to RGPS directly at 2C to secure a seat for my daughter.Rgps wonβt go into 2C Supp.
Any remaining places will be snapped up eagerly by end of 2C : by SC > 2 km.
Because a lot of parents > 2 km, are eyeing & targeting Rgps.
There are 2 groups of parents, under > 2 km.
A) one group -
Child not enrolled in any Phase yet.
They are waiting for 2C next week, to enrol.
They are eyeing Rgps, plus some other schools in mind, like a hawk.
B) another group -
Child already been enrolled, from Phase 1 to 2B.
They also eyeing Rgps.
If situation is comfirmed favorable on the last day of p2C (Friday, 1 Aug) -
They are prepared to withdraw from the earlier Phase, re-register for Rgps, and mentally prepared ballot under 2C, > 2 km.
Whatever happen, these 2 different groups > 2 km, must be cautious -
Make sure that only > 2 km confirmed got chance to ballot, then try Rgps.
If last minute on last day of p2C -
a big pool of (1 to 2 km) suddenly turn up, pushing > 2 km totally out without even a chance to smell balloting, better dont withdraw from the earlier phase school. -
topguytang:
You can access your chances on the last day of P2C by checking with the school. You need to be aware that NYPS has affiliation with NYGH for girls and it's a great advantage for your daughter if you are planning ahead for her.Thank phtthp very much for providing such valuable information and analysis.

because if SC > 2 km don't want, it will be opened up to PRs, who want Raffles Girls primary, very much.
In that last hour : the PRs within 1 km from Hillcrest, are also waiting, want to know if they stand any chance, any hope at all of entering ?
Our school started in 1844.
We had a long thick history, of tradition and values.
This year (2014) : Rgps turn 170 years old.

Since your dd has not been enrolled into any school yet -
You may register into Nanyang today, first day of Phase 2C.
On Friday around 4 pm, once you confirm more or less how many ballot within 1 km at Nanyang, you need to decide : do you still want to go ahead & give a shot at Nanyang ?
If Yes and your dd gets in, she can go to affliated Nanyang Girls High next time, if Able to meet affliated Cut off point.
This would be a very big, important advantage to her : as she can study in a straight through \"Integrated curriculum\", from Sec 1 express until \"A\" level, bypassing \"O level\".
In contrast, for our Rgps girls to get into Nanyang Girls High, we have to work very hard, be it via DSA or via PSLE.
If No, come back quickly and enrol yr dd into Rgps.
(you stationed over there, your spouse stationed here, with a queue number)
Once Phase 2C end until end of Primary 5 (a long period of time) in 2019 -
You may Seek transfer into Nanyang primary (if still keen).
Once 102 vacancies are filled up by end of p2C, full house, Rgps will close door. -
Iβm at RGPS now. 3:30pm. 63SC. 5PR.
