Secondary School Chinese

Which school u planning for dsa?Hie
I need desperate help here.
My ds is currently in P5 and is taking Higher Chinese but was ungraded in SA1.
We plan that to apply for direct school admission.
If the Higher CHinese still continue at this rate. Will it affect the chances of direct school admission thru academics ( English and Maths ) ?
As I understand that all students who go thru DSA into the secondary school has to take higer chinese in their secondary school.
We are pretty worried about this chinese thingy. It's a headache. Should we let my child continue with the higher chinese during p5 ?
Or drop it all together now ?
Does the children need to take higher chinese during their primary school in order to get easier access into DSA ? Or it is unnecessary for them to take Higher chinese in primary just for DSA ?
Sorry about all these questions. Cause I'm seriously blur with regards to these issue. Worried also. -
Your concern should not be about DSA. You should be considering if your son can cope with HCL for PSLE.
Some info: You don’t need to have taken HCL in primary school to take HCL in secondary school, provided you meet the other PSLE requirements. And not all schools require you to take HCL in secondary school, DSA or not. HCL is only compulsory in some secondary schools, mostly SAP ones, and even then, not all require it to be compulsory. -

I do not intend for my child to take HCL in his PSLE.
Thanks for your info. I’m relieved that they do not need to take HCL in order to take HCL in secondary. However u’re saying it is compulsory in mostly SAP schools.
My child is aiming Dunman High or Victoria.
If he is to go in thru DSA Academics, he’s strong in his other 3 subjects. Mainly As and A*. Does it means it’s a 6 years IP, which requires them to do HCL, right ?
Could someone enighten me on this aspect ? Thanks. -
DSA does not requires HCL.
HCL is only useful as ADDITIONAL points in PSLE T-scores, and this is only recognised in SAP schools like Hwa Chong, Nanyang, Dunman, Catholic High, River Valley…
For example, if your dc’s PSLE score is 258, then for these schools, they will also include HCL points (+1 for Pass, +2 for Merit, +3 for Distinction). So if dc gets Merit for hCL, then these schools will consider that your child has an equivalent PSLE of 260 (258+2).
For all non-SAP schools, HCL subject is not considered in the PSLE score.
There is NO requirement for 6-year IP students to take HCL.
Child who does not take HCL in primary school can still op to take HCL in secondary school. In the PSLE slip, there will be an indication whether you are offered to take HCL or not. You can opt in or out of HCL at that juncture. -

If I'm not mistaken, HCL is compulsory in Dunman High. And their standard of Chinese is high. So think carefully if your son will be able to cope with HCL in DHS. Of course some students who didn't take HCL in primary school are doing fine in DHS. It depends on the student's ability. You should know roughly your son's standard. Victoria is not an SAP school so I don't think HCL is compulsory.hie jtoh

Hi, all IP students in VS take HcL in yr 1. Ds didnt do HCL at all in primary school and he dsa through sports last year. He was also offered a place at DHS although he has no HCL at psle.
He is taking HCL now at VS. So far coping fine. As far as I know, all IP students (cedar, tjc etc) have to take HCL, at least in year 1. Not sure if there is an option to drop later on. Hope that helps. -

Thanks for clarifying about Victoria. Not all IP schools require you to take HCL. RGS, RI, SCGS, MGS, ACSI all do not stipulate HCL as compulsory.Hi, all IP students in VS take HcL in yr 1. I think although hcl not compulsory for admission (dhs also not compulsory) but in year 1, the schools dont offer normal chi right? All need to take hcl? Are there normal chi classes in RGS and RI?

It's up to the students to decide if they would rather take normal chinese rather than HCL.
