Just to share.

I used the lego sets that that we have at home.

For example.

1) What is 3 more than 6? ____

He will first fix 6 lego pieces. And then add on 3 more pieces. And then he will count the total.

My son prefers legos than the colourful counter beads. :lol:

Do you have a problem teaching this to a kid:


a) 2 more than 6 is ___ (2+6 : this one is ok to explain)
b) 2 more than ____ is 8 (8-2)

I have a problem trying to explain why the first one is + and the second one -

It is so intuitive to me that I don't know how to explain :oops:

I have already tried what some of you have posted here about the before and after but the kid still does not understand.
Any more ideas?

e.g.
a) 2 more than 6 is _______
number sentence is 6 + 2 = _________ (2 more means +2, not +6)

b) 2 more than ________ is 8
number sentence is _________+ 2 =8

The main point to understand is
2 more means +2
3 more means +3
2 less means -2
3 less means -3

When the child know how to write the number sentence for each question,
then they can figure out themselves whether to plus or minus the numbers given to get the answer very clearly.

ps. My ds is in p1 this year. I let my ds practise on type a qns till he is at ease, before i proceed with type b qns. Hope this helps!

Hi peopot,

Please try to guide your daughter and let her understand about unit.

50 cents + 50 cents = 100 cents and
100 cents equal to $1.

This is the method I use.

1. 5 is 1 less than _
I teach my kids to close the number that comes before \"the less than\" or \"more than\". For this eg, he will need to close number 1. He will then read it as 5 is less than _____. If he understands concept more or less, he should know that the blank should be filled with bigger number. Since the answer must be a bigger number, he needs to add instead of minus.

2. _ is 1 less than 3
Close the number before the less than again. The question will read as what is less than 3. The blank must me a number smaller than 3. So must minues in order to get smaller number.

maybe u can try replacing the word 'is' with the '=' sign. But your child must always remember when it comes to subtracting, always big number minus small number.


1. 5 is 1 less than _
5 = _ - 1
2. _ is 1 less than 3
_ = 3 - 1

1 less than 7 is _____
7 - 1 = _

8 is ___ more than 3.
8 = _ + 3

Hey! That’s how I teach my gal too! I told her 'is" and "=" is the same here. She seems to get it.
