      Hi all

i have read from pg 1 up to here but am still very much confused :?

many school of tots is good but 'brain-damaging' when you trying to figure out what's best for your child ... kekeke

my boy is 3yo - i hope he can learn phonics - so he can learn how to read
(i have been reading to him since birth ...)
i think he memorises what is being taught rather than being able to read independently

yesterday, i happen to enquire phonics for my son - teacher 'interviewed' him .. say that he's ready to learn phonics

1.5hrs - very academic (table and chair type)
10 kids (he will join k1 students)
teacher will use Montessori method to teach

according to her - she says - for my child to improve - he will need to be in the company of older kids..

to cut story short - i enrolled him

somehow, now regret ... after reading this topic - i think the lessons gg to be too rigid for 3yo and teacher is very strict

any advise - much appreciated ๐Ÿ˜›

        no sweat.
try out first. if kid shows sign of fatigue or rejection, request for downgrade to lower level, more fun class.

Has anyone sent their kids to Lorna Whiston for phonics class?

                Can kindly share experience?
I don't think LW has a phonics class as in only focus on phonics only.

My K1 is currently attending their K1 classes where they do phonics, reading and writing as well. This is actually on top of the phonics class that she does at J&E. Personally, we think that it's a good compliment because LW class IMO is more of all rounder english program. I recall that their teacher told me that the phonics is only about 10-20% of entire cirriculum that's when we chose the program as I don't want too much duplication of what she does at J&E. Eg. in LW, she is only learning sounds of letters now but in J&E, she is already into simple blending.

But I do see good results out of the program. The kids are asked to bring 2 books home every week to read. They have to read to class/ teacher the following week. This inspired my K1 to read and hence her sight words has improve. Also, as she stays with my parents on weekdays (only speak chinese), she tend to speak english to us the chinese way. Recently, we observed that she speaks better/ proper english now. She would use past tense, etc...

                  Hi MMM

I've just signed up my K1 for Jan & Elly at Bt Timah ๐Ÿ˜„

Had his first lesson yesterday with teacher Tyler, he likes it. Perhaps I will consider LW next year, since it's not cheap.

Hi, i am pondering bt Zoophonics (thomson) & I can read (AMK). I've brought my son for the assement in both centre but i can't tell which sch is better. Both teachers seems to be rather nice and friendly.

Anyone have any recommendations? My son seems to prefer I can read but having read the comments abt I can read...i am abit skeptical. Is it really that bad?

Rather confused! :? Anyone have any good teachers to share?
                    Pls help.

                      Hi Dafodil,

What a coincidence! Your kids are same age as mine. My kids -1st (Mar06)and 2nd (Jul08) .

I have no experience for that particular branches.

I had sent my son to Zoophonics at Siglap Centre. I personally don't find it very good.

For I Can Read, i can share with you my colleauges experiences. What i gather is
                      1. My A colleague reads to her kids many books before bedtime daily. Not much homework for ICR. Her kids benefited and do well in school.
                      2. My B colleague sent her daughter there without reading any books to her. Her child couldn't read well. Just simply attending enrichment classes.

Aside a good school, parents need to guide the children at home too in order to achieve your goal unless the child can learn without repetition/revision.

For my case, i sent my son to MMI since Jan10 to learn phonics. Had decided to teach him at home wihout attending phonics class. He will end his class there end of this month.

If you are interested to teach phonics at home, please go to popular bookstore to get My preschool world series (book 1-4) that cums with readers/activities/vcd. Is about $30 a set.

For one to one, you may try to call Mrs Thong at phone no. 91063531.

Sorry if it doesnt help much.

                        Hi Charmaine_chong,

                        I have daughter in K2.
Read in your post about your colleague who reads many books before bedtime daily. My daughter wants me to read several books to her too, but I wonder how it will help if she listens to so many stories. I didn't read widely to my son then, so I do not want to make the same mistake with younger one. Could you advise ? Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚
