Today is the day my Son gets his prelim results. It is a monumental day. If he does well, it will provide an assurance that he has finally "matured", and understands the significance of this life-determining exam. Many times I have wondered, how many other children out there are like him, who see little beyond their noses, whose petty concern is when their next TV-FB-burger fix is. Who adamantly refuse to contemplate a rough ride in life, far removed from their cushy existence, a life they only read about in the papers.

I worry for him. PSLE to me, is more a test of discipline, resolve and industry. It is only the later years, that intelligence and acumen is necessary in the mix for academic success. These 3 tenants are the true determinants of success in life.

I worry for him. The odds don’t look good.
I wonder how I am to "spin it" if he , again, does not perform to his ability in this penultimate exam.

          … random thoughts …

Some kids really change a lot later in life...take heart Siennasu...

dd called from school to tell her English prelim marks, didn’t do well as expected, but did better than say. She was in tears while talking to me over phone, I told this is not the end to the road, but she says most of her friends in class are improving…but she doesn’t see any improvement.

So far all the papers she attempted at home she scored well, but when it comes to school she’s not able to be upto mark…really wondering where everything is going wrong.
It breaks my heart to see my kid crying.

Some tips to share about preparing for PSLE English Listening Comprehension that falls on 19 Sept, Friday.

You can do mock preparation at home. Once the child receives the paper, tell the child to scan through all the questions and answers to get an idea of what to expect and what to look out for. Play the CD that comes with the Listening Comprehension booklet and tell the child to only focus only on the paper and not be distracted by any other things as the child needs full concentration to use the ears to listen and use the eyes to match the corresponding answer.

Listen to the CD with the child and let the child attempt the questions. Parents only step in to guide the child after the child has listened to the passage twice and yet unable to get the correct answers. What the parents can do is to rewind the passage, highlight to the child which part is important and let the child try to answer the question again. If the child failed to get the answer, point out to the child the exact phrase and word in that part to get the answer.

The first practice may take a longer time but with the second or third practice, the child should get the technique of handling listening comprehension questions.
