Kangkangteo:

This is from the earliest post.
1) 15 (2) 14. (3) 5. (4) 4

60 x 1 75 x 1
30 x 2. 25 x 3
20 x 3. 15 x 5
15 x 4
12 x 5
10 x 6

5 bags (12 apples and 15 pears)
15 bags (4 apples and 5 pears) --- maximum number of bags

So answer is 4 apples. --- option (4)
Yes answer is 4 as 75 cannot be divided by 12 (option 3)

If English and Math papers are considered easy, the killer paper should be Science. Be prepared for a difficult Science PSLE paper.

pecalis:
Question is roughly : There are 60 apples and 75 pears. She wants to group them together with no remainder. There are same no. of total fruitsin each group. How many apples are there in each group?

1) 5
2) 4
3) 12
4) 15

ds said that the question asked 'the person wanted to have as many bags(groups) as possible'
So the correct is 4

HCF of 60 and 75 = 15
So 15 bags (max number of bags) of 4 apples and 5 pears in each bag.
Then ans is 2) 4 apples in each bag.

My kid said the options given are
1) 15
2) 12
3) 5
4) 4

He said the question was something like every bag must have the same number of one kind of fruit.

His answer is option 4 which is 4.
We can know this qn's answer only if we know the exact words and contents of the qn. My dd said there was no \"total number\" in the question. The wordings are important for qns like these as they may give different answers.
Instil or instill?

Instil - British version
Instill - American version

DD’s answer : inculcate the value of perserverance
American English is acceptable in the PSLE. It’s a misperception that we use British English in Singapore, we actually don’t . I always laugh when teachers tell their pupils that the kids are learning British English in school. We don’t . We use Singapore Standard English here, not British English. American English is acceptable in the PSLE. If we are learning / using British English, why then do teachers teach American English vocabulary such as "apartment" and "elevator"? Why do our teachers not speak with a British accent if they are teaching British English in school? I was an English HOD for many years and supervised the marking of the PSLE English papers ( both paper 1 & paper 2) for years and as far as I know, whenever there’s a variant to the spelling of a word, both are accepted. In the PSLE mark scheme and PSLE Information Booklet issued to all schools and English HODs, it’s stated clearly that it’s ok to use any form of standard English.

My DD’s version of the qn

There are 60 apples and 75 pears. There are equal number of apples and pears in each bag. How many apples are there in each bag if as many bags as possible are used?

What’s equal number of apples and pears in each bag? How does one interpret it?
So that’s why among her gep friends, it’s an even split between answers 4 apples and 5 apples. There is also a more or less an even split among her mainstreamer friends.

It's not really testing English but this type of qn can be open to interpretations.
Equal number of apples and pears in each bag can mean equal ratio of apples and pears in 1 bag or it can mean every bag has the same number of fruit.
If it's the former, then the answer will be 5.
If it's the latter, the answer will be 4.
