Dear parents/readers,
I am Steven, a local piano teacher of 8 years experience. I have a Licentiate (Distinction) degree in both Piano performing and Teaching by the Associated Board Royal School of Music. Over the past years I have produced distinction students in the two piano schools I worked in. As I am currently shifting my priority to my own private students, I am recruiting piano students whom I would like to nurture and teach.
I have taught Beginner's course/Grade 1 to Diploma (both Trinity and Royal Board) students ranging from 5 to 19 years old (as well a 35 years old adult too!), sent them for concerts, practical and theory exams as well as the O levels.
I live in Ang Mo Kio and teach at home usually, unless the student's place is in the vicinity. The prices of the piano lessons will go according to the usual market rates (details will be given at request).
I enjoy working with children and young adults, and am generally looking into developing interest and music appreciation whilst training techniques in interested students:) And yes, in case you are wondering, I have spent many years with NAFA's school of young talents.
If you are interested in sending your child/yourself to piano lessons under me or would find out more, please send me a private message or email me at [email protected]. I will kindly answer any queries/requests. -
Dear all,
I am going to start a paper analyzing various factors that contribute to poor learning and ways to rectify them. To this end, I am looking to accept students who have attempted grade 3 or above practical exam and scored either a fail or just slightly above pass (100-110 for ABRSM). If your children fit into this description or you know anyone who does, I will be more than happy to accept you and help you out. As a token of appreciation, I will provide discounted fees for 3 months worth of lessons.

Is a very interesting forum. I would like to share my opinion. I’m a piano teacher which I don’t have a diploma in music. I’ve been teaching for 14 years.
After so many years of teaching, I reckon be it qualification, experience, teaching method, timing and etc. most importantly is the chemistry between the teacher and the student.
1st- if there is no chemistry between student and teacher no matter how good is the teacher, the student will still lost the interest or rather need a push factor to carry on.
2nd- no matter how low and how flexible is the teacher willing to be or how enthusiastic the student is, the chemistry is still important in order to made the lesson fun and interesting.
However, as for the fees, I guess is varies and it depends on varies of reasons.
1st- etiquette of the teacher
2nd- transportation cost
3rd- experience and qualification of the teacher
Lastly, when a parent looking for a piano teacher or any other teacher, I guess it must depends on what are the parent looking for in terms of the teacher.
Good luck to all -

My girl’s piano teacher has been teaching my girl for the last 5 years.
Her name is Cindy. You may want to try her at 96307894.
Her rate is rather reasonable.
She is patience and I have never hear her raising her voice at my girl before. -
According to my friend, there is a piano teacher in the Bukit Timah area with only Grade 8 ABRSM and he or she is charging $130 per hour for lessons at his/her house!!
Dreamaurora:
Well, to be even more blunt and adding to jce's comment, technically only teachers with full time qualifications (Bachelor and above) with pedagogy components in their studies OR private teaching diplomas (DipABRSM, ATCL, or ALCM in Instrumental Teaching or higher level) are actually trained to teach. Grade 8 Practical or any of the performance diplomas only indicate proficiency level in the instrument and nothing else. So going by the definition above, probably 80% of teacher population in Singapore are 'unqualified'.jce:
Firstly, the teacher is not qualified - he is still pursuing a dip. A grade 8 does not give any qualification to TEACH. It only means \"can play the dots on the book\". Sorry, this may sound very harsh but it is the fact.
What kind of progress should you see? Simple rhythm, notes recognition. That's a start.
How long it takes before grade 1 - that depends on the kid's learning power, the effort put in, how much the teacher pushes and what expectations the teacher has - some teachers happily send in kids who can just about pass! The progress can take 2 years or more at this early age.
That being said, 'unqualified' teachers can be great teachers too, provided that they are resourceful and willing to improve their trade. Teaching is afterall a very hands on profession and a lot of things have to be learnt by trial and error.
How long to grade 1? I have mentioned this before; ABRSM recommends 18 months from commencement of beginner lessons. Can be shorter or longer depending on a few factors such as the child's natural ability, work ethic, teacher's teaching technique and expectations, parental involvement, etc. Different teachers may also have different approach and expectations on progress. For example, I expect within 3 months of lessons that beginners can read and identify notes on the staff comfortably whereas some other teacher may choose to focus on being able to listen and replicate Suzuki-style.
