Comparing Science Enrichment Programs
-
My girl is currently with MS for science since beginning of year.
I decided to give MS a try after DH got fed up teaching DD..
My comments on the teacher:
He is punctual for class every lesson and never AWOL.
He is also very approachable.
A retired teacher and thus, experienced in subject and with kids too.
MS material is really good (now i know why parents are asking to buy over the notes). Practise papers are challenging and comprehensive enough for DD to tackle her school's papers more confidently. Her grades improved in SA1 and now waiting to see how she perform for coming SA2.
My DD comments
He is patient and she is encouraged to ask qns in class.
She is learning better and now she prefers this teacher to teach to DH
Hope this helps. -

anyone who has gotten the contact of the science tutor in Holland from Julia earlier on - can you please share it with me please? Kindly PM me. Thanks.
Noticed that many has seek this Holland tutor, can anyone kindly share any feedback? Expensive? 1-1 or class tutoring?
Please PM me the contact # as well. Thanks! -
Hi Hifive and other parents,
I won't recommend Mindstretcher $160.50/month weekend class as they don't really teach how students answer process skill questions, but their concept maps and worksheets are good for exam revision. My DS likes to do their experiments. If your expectation is 60-75 marks, you may try them as different teachers may have different effect for the child.
For process skill questions, end up I still got to teach myself as the school requires a different way of answering the process skill questions in order to score 1 mark. Yes, 1 mark. Parents gone through the pain will know what i mean.
eg. insect in Jar X is covered in air-tight container with food and water given. What will happen to insect in Jar X? Give your reasons (1 mark).
Wrong ans: The insect in Jar X will die. It needs air, water and food. (0 marks given)
correct ans: The insect in Jar X will die due to a lack of air. Living things need air, water and food to survive.
I suggest teach your child yourself if you are able to. I am a temporary housewife (currently jobless) with diploma qualification. My DS got low band 1 for SA1 & CA2 though neighbourhood school
. Of cos, I have to scream and he needs to co-operate to achieve this
. as he never believes achieving 3 Band 1 and we did in Pri 1.
I can't share the materials as we don't have full sets and had quit from mind stretcher. Alternatively, I will recommend you may get these guide books from Just Education Centre or any Popular bookstores, Causeway point or Jurong Point branch for you. Get the popular card first to enjoy discount if you don't have one.
I can't advise Just Education Centre is good or not and did not sign up due to their time slots.
1) Just Education Science Power Guide P3 & P4 (a boy holding the book green in colour) ($13.90 popular)
2) Just Education Teachers' Circle ($9.00 popular)
3) EPH Lower Block P3&P4 Ultimate Science Guide (New Syllabus) by Low Wai Cheng and Leong May Kuen ($10.90 popular)
4) EPH Lower Block Ultimate Science Workbook ($7.90 popular)
5) EPH Lower Block Science Frequently Asked Questions by Janet Sim B.SC. ( for challenging questions) or may get Challenging Science for topic practice.
Hope this will help. -

So sorry, fellow parents, for not responding promptly! My DS is now in Sec 2 and I seldom check in this forum nowadays. I happened to log in today and have just replied to your PMs.starmoon:

My husband and I credit our DS's PSLE results to this amazing tutor at Holland. (Sorry, I don't want to post her contact details in a public forum, as I have not asked for her permission.)
My DS was very fortunate to be under her tutelage since P5. My DS's P4 form teacher recommended to us when his results dipped in P5 SA1. He was not coping well with the transition from P4 to P5 then. He told us that the tutor and her team are experienced MOE teachers who are also PSLE markers for many years, they have written very good materials and are excellent at explaining the concepts. Besides, this particular lady tutor is very good at motivating and inspiring students. Everything he told us about her has turned out to be true. She has taught my son very well. He looked forward to his weekly lessons, and even initiated to join her English classes. What I also appreciate is the meticulous marking for compositions and Science open-ended questions. All the worksheets are neatly and carefully marked with feedback/ encouragement on the worksheets. It is very hard to find qualified teachers who not only teach well but have a heart for our children. This road to searching for the right tutor for my DS has been fraught with some very bad experiences with irresponsible/dishonest tutors. I've also paid for expensive tuition from a 'branded' tuition centre only to find out that the class tutor is a fresh graduate. Hope this helps! Julia -
