In recent two years, the COP of Dunman High is reach or even higher the HCI, so the parent want to know the output also --- A level result. The compare is fair.

Although there's still room for improvement for Dunman High's A Level results, I would still say it's not fair to compare with RI or HCI's result for the following reasons:

1) Girls generally do better than boys in PSLE. Look at the COP and mean PSLE score of RGS and NYGH for this year and compare it with DHS:

RGS: COP:260, Mean:267
NYGH: COP:263, Mean:268
DHS: COP:258, Mean:262

Historically, the gender ratio of DHS' students is always 2 girls to 1 boy. This means that DHS' COP and mean are mainly influenced by the female student it takes in. So we can infer from the mean PSLE scores that both NYGH and RGS are getting better female students than DHS.

You argued that COP of DHS is about the same as HCI. Let's look at the mean and COP for HCI this year:

HCI: COP:257, mean: 262

Again, it goes back to the point that girls do better than boys in PSLE, hence HCI may seemingly has about the same COP and mean PSLE score as DHS but in actual fact HCI is taking the better male students. If DHS separates its COP and mean PSLE scores for boys and girls then it will be obvious which school is taking in the brighter students.

Also take note that NYGH's students will eventually go to HCI for A levels, so you can't just compare the COP and mean PSLE scores of DHS with HCI only.

To sum it up, one shouldn't just look at COP at a superficial level and make deduction about student calibre.

2) HCI and RI and many other JCs receives late-bloomers who did well for O levels but DHS does not. This was a point raised by Weihan in another post so I won't repeat it here again. I just want to highlight that we shouldn't underestimate the effect of just taking in 100 or 200 of these late-bloomers. These students are not necessarily inferior to those in the IP; in fact they may be better at acing exams due to the experience they acquire when they did their O levels and may contribute to the number of students with 7,8 or 9 distinctions. Unfortunately, DHS do not have this luxury.

3) DHS was the traditional feeder school for VJC and TJC before it implemented the IP. If you have been to VJC or TJC during the 1st 3 months where students still wore their secondary school uniform a few years ago, you will be amazed by the no. of Dunmanians in VJ and TJ. In the old JC ranking VJ and TJ were almost always ranked 3rd and 4th behind HCJC and RJC. Hence it is only fair DHS now compares itself to VJC and TJC.

4) The difference in the amount of resources that independent schools such as HCI and RI have at its disposal compared to government/autonomous schools(DHS, RV) is vast. HCI and RI probably expanded their campus with the resources they have so that they can take in more students and have a virtual monopoly on students of high cailbre.

Well....but most of their students are qualified for the scholarship and in fact have their schooling free of charge compared to RV and DHS students who still have to pay $15

Hi. Basically, I agree with all your analysis except this one quoated above. There seems to be a underlying implication that boys are smarter than girls and boys are late bloomers and they eventually do better than girls in A level.

Many people think this way including me but I find out recently to my surprise that it isn't the case. Look at HCI parade of top students in their website....ALMOST ALL are girls....so conclusion girls also do better in A levels than boys. :stupid:

RVHS first batch of A lvl only take it this yr, so result can only see next yr.

Current schools fees are:

RI/RGS = S$300/mth
HCI/NYGH = S$200/mth

As current scholarship is capped at $200/mth, students at RI/RGS have to fork out the extra $100. Two years ago, there was no cap.

This would mean additional of $7200 ($1.2k x 6 yrs) for the 6-yr IP education. Thus, this is also one of the reasons why the COP for RI/RGS have dropped and is likely to remain so.

COP for DHS will continue to remain strong as it is still the top govt mixed school, open to both genders.
