Well said both writers! My DD enjoy her school life. Now on Sec 3. She talked nicety about principal, teachers, school mates and even the canteen operators!! The school is still giving her full support, and motivate in her life long education journey. I am glad her choice to SCGS and to triple science are enjoyable and rewarding to her every day happiness.

Can anyone tell me, why in Sec 2 there’s test every wk. At times there’s 2 tests per week. I find that its very stressful for them cos on top of it they still hv piles of sch work to complete and they don’t really have the time to revise.
Their life everyday is revolving around the sch work, tests, graded assignment and Project Tasks. Their weekend is also burn out in order to complete the work which is given to them. The only time they really can rest is during yr end holidays. For Mar & Jun holidays, I think they will also be given sch work to do. -

My dd is also in Sec 2. These few weeks are very busy weeks for them especially the week before Chinese New Year. :?: They have a lot of projects due on the same date and tests at the same time. :snooze: I told my dd that time management is very important. She needs to learn through experience how to manage her time efficiently in order to cope with the hectic schedule. So far, she seems to enjoy her learning process although stress at time to finish a few projects due on the same date and preparing for her tests. She enjoys project works very much 'cos can work together with her friends (go to her friend's house). :boogie: They do have tests and pop quiz quite frequently which I think is good for them. Normally, the test or pop quiz will come after finishing one topic. From the tests, the teachers will be able to guage the level of the students' understanding of that particular topic. If the students did not perform well for that test, the teacher will conduct remedial classes or explain to the students individually if necessary. For March, the Sec 2 will be going for their Service Learning Trip either to Cambodia, Vietnam or Thailand. I think they are supposed to do a project on it after their trip and now, individual classes are supposed to raise fund for their trips. For information, there will be a briefing to parents for those classes going to Cambodia tomorrow. Maybe, the only thing you can do to de-stress is to perceive tests as just weekly assignments. I'm a Sec 3 student in SCGS currently (batch of 2015) and I thought I'd address some unanswered queries about SC and some extra reflections!
Firstly, the classes in lower secondary as of 2013 (due to the new IP students) are now arranged as follows:
IP: SY (Sincerity), SE (Service), PR (Prudence) and PE (Perseverance)
Os: GY (Generosity), GR (Grace), CO (Courage) and DG (Diligence)
There are 4 classes per stream in each level. Sec 1 class streaming is by PSLE results and Sec 2 streaming is by your overall average in Sec 1.
On the other hand, classes in upper secondary differ slightly almost every year. For example, 3/4SY has almost always been the top triple science class but this year the school has changed it to be the top academic class meaning that students who don't offer triple science but received top Sec 2 marks are also in that class. At least for my cohort, this is how it is:
Triple Science: SY, SE (most definitely the two triple science classes every year even so)
Physics-Chemistry: PR, PE, GR
Biology-Chemistry: GY, DG, CO (CO also has some students offering single science)
This only applies to my cohort, just the level above already has a completely different system so it really depends on the level and the subject preferences!
Some good things to note about SC that hasn't been mentioned is that
1. Lit is compulsory in upper secondary, though you can choose to take it as a full subject or an elective
2. There is little or actually no segregation between SCGPS and non-SCGPS student. I myself am not from SCGPS yet some of my best friends are from it. We mix well and after a while everyone forgets about our different roots because like PSLE scores, it doesn't really matter to us anymore! New school, new start, right? So parents please don't be worried for your child especially if she is the only one from her primary school (like me) in the cohort. SC Sec girls are friendly and fun and friends are easily made as the years go by, of course the first few orientation days SC Pri girls stick together but that is only temporary and natural!
3. Our leadership roles don't just stop at prefects (SCPB). We have SC Ambassadors who do school tours and represent the school at events like DSA School Talks, and PLs aka Peer Leaders and SPLs aka Senior Peer Leaders who play a part in orientation and bonding the school. There is also the Young Docents who guide at the National Museum of Singapore and Asian Civilisation Museum as well as Science Communicators who guide at the Science Centre. Girls can get roles as long as they show they can cope in terms of grades (especially when taking on big roles or EXCO roles or multiple roles) as well as sincerity so it's quite easy for your daughters to get roles if they are passionate enough to serve from the heart! These leaders are called ELs or Emerging Leaders in the school. The ALs, Accelerated Leaders, are girls holding top roles, including the head and vice head prefects, all senior sec 3 prefects, CCA presidents and vice presidents, EXCO of the above mentioned roles (eg Ambass, PL) There isn't a big deal to the terms ELs and ALs, just that we receive different trainings and ALs have a bigger responsibility. ALs are usually only Sec 3s but ELs can be from Sec 1 onwards. Auditions and campaigns for the roles take place at different times of the year depending on the needs (etc. PB elections during July when the sec 4s stand down) so girls can always keep a lookout for announcements which are clearly made to us.
My personal reflection on SCGS after being here for close to 3 years is that it is where you find a second home and a loving family - we really grow nearer the sky (that's the last line of the school song) For my own cohort of 2015 we are very close, students are not limited by our classes or combinations, we mix well and find close friends in CCAs and you can always see students mingling among classes. Yes, grades are valued here, but that is not due to any elitism but rather the personal drive to do well which is natural and part of the culture here. I am proud to say that while we don't hesitate to have fun when we can, we are also equally serious in our work. Us SC girls take pride in our culture and shared love for the school. We have many little extra things like a Kindness Bar for the SKM, Fabunotes for students to nominate those that have made a difference, Angel-Mortal game for the lower secondary 1 and 2s to confide to and many more initiatives thought up by the girls. The teachers are kind and care a lot for us, often going the extra mile for us! It is a privilege to be part of the SC family and experience, and I'm sure the other SC girls will agree. Although we strive (and maintain successfully) for high Os results every year and keep our good status we also don't have an overly competitive or selfish environment! Girls will willingly share notes and tutor friends, and rarely do you hear of people being too selfish or paranoid to keep notes to themselves. For all parents and girls considering SCGS, it will be one of the best decisions of your life!!!

The new JC is going to be designed by CLP Architects - the same architect that designed SMU and Gardens by the Bay. Apparently , it would have escalators and a glass 'enclosure" at the top of the building that will give a panaromic view of Bishan Park. The design of the campus blends into the park.
Also the JC will be offering all 3 prestigious program
-Music Elective Programme ( currently offered in ACJC,DHS,RI,TJC)
- Humanities Scholarship Prog ( currently in ACJC,HCI,NJC,RI,VJC,TJC)
-Bicultural Studies Prog ( currently offered in DHS, HCI, RVHS)
Seemed like MOE have already have very high expectations of the JC. -
