      P5G:
      eric2010:

Tanks X and Y are each filled with some water. If water from Tank Y is poured into Tank X unitl the water in Tank X reaches the brim, there will be 8 litres of water left in Tank Y. If water from Tank X is poured into Tank Y until the water in Tank Y reaches the brim, there will be 26 litres of water left in Tank X. The ratio of the volume of Tank X to the volume of Tank Y is 5:3. How many more litres of water are needed to fill both tanks to their brim ?

      [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] ..................Tank X
      [ ][ ][ ] ........................... Tank Y

      [ ........ ][ ] ..................Water in Tank X
      [8][ ] ................................ Water in Tank Y

      [ 26 ][ ]\t....................... Water in Tank X\t\t\t\t
      [ ][ ] .............................Water in Tank Y

      [ 26 ][ ][ ]\t...... 5u\t
      [8][ ][ ] ............. 3u

      2u -- 26 - 8 = 18
      1u -- 18/2 = 9
      3u -- 9 x 3 = 27
      27 - 8 = 19 litres

19 more litres to fill both tanks to their brim.

        Dear Mathsguru,

Aiyoh, I thot I am very clever with such questions already. Sikali I got stuck with this one. Pls help me.

There are 50 and pen and pencil. Each pen cost $6 and each pencil cost $5. The total cost is $47 MORE THAN the total cost of the pencil. How many pen and how many pencil are there?

          Dear Mathsguru,

Another one. I am seeing stars…

There are 100 fruit tarts for 100 people. Each adult had 3 fruit tarts and every 3 children share one fruit tart. How many children are there?

            This is a typical chicken-ducks head&leg question.
The best way to go about solving without using algebra or guess and check is to make a supposition, that you have 50 pens (pen because it is more expensive).
In this case the total cost of the pens are $300. and it is $300 more than the total cost of pencils (there are no pencils).
So what happens when we interchange 1 pen for 1 pencil.
The total cost of pens will decrease by $6 . The total cost of pens will be $300-$6-$5 = 300-11.
therefore to find the number of pencils interchanged, (300-47)/11 = 253/11= 23.

              Again make a suposition.
Lets say there are 100 adults. there will be 300 fruits.
We must interchange 3 adults for 3 children because there cant be 2 children or 1 to get 2/3 or 1/3 fruit.
if we interchange 3 adults for 3 children the total number of fruits are 300-9+1= 300-8
therefore to find the number of groups of 3 children, (300-100)/8 = 25.
              therefore there are 25*3=75 children

1 set of 1 adult and 3 children share 4 tarts.
So, 100 tarts divided by 4 tarts = 25 sets.
Since there are 25 sets of 1 adults and 3 children,
                therefore there are 25 x 3 = 75 children.

This is quite a straight forward question. There are some questions that are quite similar that requires this method with a combination of smart guess and check.

                  Pls help me in this…Thanks…

Complete the addition square by finding the missing numbers. (imagine all the numbers inside a 9 grid square)

                  + 200 300
                  50 250 A
                  60 B 360

                  A = ?
                  B = ?

did you notice that 250 = 200+ 50(the number above and to the left)
an 360 = 300+60 (number above and to the left?)
