      Priskhipo:
      ...After,

      Ali had 3 units + 1 unit = 4 units
      Jim had 2 units - 1 unit = 1 unit
      Beng had 4 units (Did not mention any change)

      Ali and Beng had same number of stickers. ( 96 more? - error?)
      Obviously, Beng must have lost some to Ali. However, to solve the problem, there has to be a relationship between what Beng lost and the 96 extra stickers the Ali has over Beng.

      People, if you post questions here, please make sure you type properly and have all the information necessary to solve the problem. We can only help with solvable problems. Otherwise, it is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together with missing pieces.

          Hi cchho, there's a learning opportunity in everything. In this case, can you let us know where you got the question from (assessment book? school past year exam paper? homework?) so that we can understand a little more?

              My son's P4 Maths question for homework:

              1. A B + B C = B C B. A, B and C represents single digit numbers. Find out them.

              Managed to solve this by iteration - 9 1 + 1 0 = 1 0 1

              2. A B + A A = B A C. A, B and C represents single digit numbers. Find out them.

              Managed to solve this also by iteration - 9 1 + 9 9 = 1 9 0

              3. I stumbled in this question, A B C + A C B = C B A

              What is the \"mathematical\" or \"modeling\" way of finding A, B and C. (Don't keep A, B and C all as zeros ๐Ÿ˜› )

                answers = 954

                C = 9

                B = 5

                A = 4

                  Yesterday, my son also got the same answer from his form teacher.

                  But, How did you get the answer? :?

                  BTW, Is the question level appropriate for P4 ???

                    Hi observer,

                    Not sure if this kind of questions will appear in school exams. But these are \"enrichment\" questions. It's to test the kids concept of numbers, beyond the usual +,-,X, /

                    You need to analyze the questions column by column

                    eg. A+A = C ==> C is a single digit, means A cannot be > 4
                    So you start with A = 4 and C = 8, fit the numbers into the last column and try out, you will find that it is not possible to fit.

                    So C can also be 9 (max), ie A+A plus a \"1\" carry over from the \"tens column\". And you fit again.

                    After a while of doing such questions, you will roughly be able to figure out.

                    Such questions will come out in Maths Olympiad tests.

                    Have fun.

                      Hi lizawa,

                      Thx for explanation.

                      As you told this may be an enrichment question to test the children sharpness, and may not be a regular question.

                      Better way to prepare for Maths olympiad.

                        This is the question in my son's math worksheet :

                        Mrs Chan has some sweets to be given to her pupils.
                        If she gives each pupil 5 sweets, she will have 61 sweets left.
                        If she gives each pupil 8 sweets, she will need 2 more sweets.
                        How many pupils does Mrs Chan have ?

                        I used algebra and get the answer as 21

                        Is there any other solution ?

                        The solution provided seems to be using stacking diagram and the working of (61+2) / 3 which to me looks like algebra equation .

                        Is algebra equation acceptable in P4 math ?
