Thanks for this phtthp. I agree with you that while we applaud those with non academic achievements, we should also not forget those who have done well academically. It is a form of character building as well to be disciplined to revise for tests and to have the right learning attitude towards tests. I heard that nyps awards trophies to the top 5 in each class. It's certainly v encouraging to the kids who have excelled.
School don't want pupils to compare ranking -phtthp:
Speech and Prize giving day is on 14th Nov.
Does anyone know what kind of awards are given to P1 and P2 students?
Top in class or standards?
neither within the same class, nor within cohort level.
In the past, school used to announce names of Top 3 pupils, in standard, for P1 and P2.
But now, school made changes.
This year (Friday : 14 Nov) : -
heard school won't give out any prize to Top 3 pupils, in standard.
So, no prize for Top 3.
Instead, school said want to focus more on developing holistic, good character values, in our children.
They trying to de-emphasize academic scores, shift more focus down towards good character & behavior development, in our pupils.
Personally : I feel that school should continue giving Top 3 pupils in standard : a prize.
So poor thing !
Top 3 in standard : no prize.
i mean ... these young kids had demo consistency & are careful in their daily school work & in their regular Term tests, throughout the whole year.
They should be praised, given encouragement, for giving their best effort put in.
Children being children : should be rewarded, for their effort, with something small. Perhaps buy them a storybook, also good.
In each class -
also no Top pupil award.
(this year : because de-emphasize on academic)
Perhaps partly because too many P1 pupils in Band 1 for 3 subjects (is a norm in our school) : so makes little or no difference whether announce or don't announce who is the Top pupil, in each class.
Perhaps school prefer to announce other unique, special rare prizes, instead, that focus more important on Character.
Award(s) are always hush, hush, secretive : in this school.
(don't know why our school behave, like this)
There should be Term 4 Role model pupil award.
Each Term : one role model pupil is selected, from each class.
Role model pupil has to do with Character building and Behavior, before a child can get selected.
The three P1 subject Tr each have in mind : who to nominate as role model pupil.
perhaps English Tr nominate pupil X, Maths Tr nominate pupil Y, Chinese Tr think of Z.
Then they come together discuss : who eventually deserve this award ?
School emphasize a lot on Character :
because many pupils from our school grow up to become future leaders of tomorrow.
Another prize is for displaying a natural flair towards languages (English & Mother Tongue : Chinese / Malay / Tamil ).
1 pupil will get the prize : per P1 class.
Lower primary (P1 to P3) emphasize a lot on getting languages right first : before Science starts to enter in P3.
So this award, is expected.
Form Tr and Mother Tongue Tr meet to discuss : which pupil in the class deserve this language award ?
After agreeing : Form Tr get admin help, to prepare draft and print out the letter of award, put inside an envelope.
Since This Friday is award(s) day :-
Form Tr will give out envelope today (one day just before Parents Conferencing day) to selected pupil(s) only : informing their parents to attend award(s) ceremony.
The school hall too cramp :
no space to accommodate all P1 to P6 parents.
So for many parents like us here who are not been invited : we won't know what prizes school give out, unless those parents or P6 graduating pupils (compulsory to attend, since they are leaving the school) who are invited to attend, are willing to share.
Many of us are blur, blur, very vague (\"mong cha cha\") : kept in the dark, dont know what's going on, because not invited to attend award ceremony.
Like you, I was also not invited to go for speech day. Neither am I aware of the awards being given out. This is ironic given that the awards are meant to applaud the girls for their exemplary behaviour and that they are to be looked upon as role models. The form teacher also did not explain or inform parents as to what awards are given out and the selection criteria.
Only one award for academic in P1 and P2 which is Best in Bilingual and it is chosen from the cohort of the level, not from each class. A friend shared that the P1 girl from the cohort got full marks for English and Mother Tongue. Wow! -
My dd is going to 1C. Really excited abt tmrw.

phtthp:
Pop into this thread.
School will issue the card to pupil, sometime in Term 2.xuanting:
i was asking for a friend whose child (next year 7yo) has not obtained a concession card for free travel.
i understand that it expires in april of the year the child turns 7 so i wanted to know if the school will issue the card immediately in p1 (then friend's child need not apply now) or later in the year.
Your friend can now bring her K2 child's birth certificate to Transit link, apply for a concession card.
Once the concession card is ready :-
your friend can let the child use it for free Travel, until the child turn 7 years old officially.
Without this concession card, if a child exceed 0.9 meters tall in height, MRT officer will question parent why child no bus card ?
Transit link stuff doesn't issue concession card for P1 student as they recognise the age according to calendar year. My girl had the card but once she was in p1, the card was invalid and i enquired the transit link staff, she took back the card for me and gave me above reply. The card was retained and the balance value was returned.
First-time top-up the MOE issued student card must be done in the transit link office. -
If we did not get the socks from the pv group today, is there other timings we can get them? For eg when we go down to get the mother tongue textbooks in dec, will they still be selling the socks?
-
Find the p1 orientation half completed. Thought it would be better if we have a little time with the kids in their respective classes for teachers to have a simple introduction. At least we get to see the teachers who will be teaching the kids and put a face to the name shown in the slide. Personally feel it would ease our anxiety better and not wait for the PTC which is like a month after school starts…Also if there is any class rules, we are there to listen and we can reinforce them at home. A simple eg, we were told in the hall that only black or navy blue hair tie allowed. My gal said teacher told her dark green is also fine…so some inconsistency. Just some thoughts…

Anyone can advice what is the approach used by the school with regards to the english material choosen :The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl (Publisher : Puffin)
Most school have textbook like introductory A, P1 Sound, P1 Listening Comprehension etc.
Existing P1 parents please share some insights. Thanks! -
GKK:
What I understand from my girl is, they read the Roald Dahl book, do some worksheets based on that book. The rest of the year, there are also certain books/stories (provided by the teacher) e.g. Mrs Wishy Washy, The Giant's Ice Cream that the teacher will go through with them. There will be worksheets, listening tasks, spelling and dictation, review assessments etc based on these stories. Through these stories, the teacher will teach the students about articles (\"a\", \"the\"), past tense, present tense, plural, singular etc.Anyone can advice what is the approach used by the school with regards to the english material choosen :The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl (Publisher : Puffin)

For writing/composition and show & tell, DD's teacher just went through some examples with them and they had to be able to do it. Not sure what is other English teachers' approach?
P2 also uses a Roald Dahl book for English. Any inputs from current P2 parents?
Other parents, please add on if there's other inputs.

Will there be any teachers on duty at gate 3 during evening dismissal?
