I was told by my son in ACS(I) that boys taking CL will take 'O' level in year 4 and those taking HCL will take 'O' level in year 3.

Hi Mandarin, I know ACS(1) has IB and 'O' path, do they practics the same for CL and HCL. Wonder what is the practics in RI , HCI, RV, DHS and NJC?

The point of doing CL is to meet the national secondary school bilingual requirement. That's why all of them have to take O-level Chinese. The point of doing HCL (practically speaking) is to meet the national pre-university requirement, which is of great significance to the IB students because they can then take a basic foreign language for their second language.

Hi! Here are a few thoughts which might be useful (or not)—just my few cents' worth...


The MGS SBC/IP curricular designs were structured to provide some GEP-like experiences and also to provide a relatively seamless entry to ACS(I)'s Year 5/6 IB programme. As with all Integrated Programmes and related options from S1 to S4, the content is at least 60-80% equivalent to the O-levels (often more). What's different is the skills-based or experiential-based learning component.

Generally, we have to go beyond the academic stereotyping that says 'my child is an arts/humanities/writing/language type' or 'my child is a science/math/logical-reasoning type'. In my 20 years of teaching in such schools and designing such programmes, I've learnt that such extreme tendencies are very rare, and that the brain is sufficiently plastic to be retrained at any age to do almost anything.

Because of such advances in cognitive neuroscience, I think the best philosophy of education is one which forces students to adapt to something out of their comfort zone — it's called 'cognitive dissonance' and is the most effective way to learn something. However, the major factors that affect the process are teacher quality and learner confidence. This is why it's always best for parents NOT to entertain a child who isn't clearly an extreme case. Just because a child likes science or maths doesn't mean you should send the poor kid to NUS High — rather, consider if that kid in four years' time will be able to pass a second-year university exam in a specific science or in mathematics.

That being true, sending a child through the IP-leading-to-IB is a far better option if available, compared to IP-leading-to-A-levels. There's not much point allowing a plant to grow broadly and then severely cutting it back. Some pruning is good; taking a hatchet to the bush is just painful.

5 points drop, from last year 252 (2013)

256 (IB : International Baccalaureate Diploma)
maintained at 256 (same as last year : 2013)

I am new to this forum. Am very interested in MGS IB/IP prog for dd (in P5 this yr but mummy nd to know better first :roll: .)

Need a clarification on the entrance. Is the entrance based on DSA or can students enter using their PSLE points only. Also is the take in based as 50% DSA and 50% thru PSLE points only? Since it is an affiliation sch what are the chances of students from non-affiliated schs gaining entry to their IB/IP prog?
