In one of the jewellery shop, we were brought to one of the show rooms by the Boss and he 'locked' us in the showroom.. he used a remote control and lowered the shutters though we can still see the open area through the glass panels... then started his sales talk.I heard similar stories from my colleagues. Some even said \"you remain in the shop for x hrs...\". Mind you, these tour packages are from popular travel agencies.
DIY in big cities is definitely doable. Save yourself from this type of \"harrassment\".
We stayed in the silk shop for about 3hrs... they just had to convince everyone to buy. -

For those who opt for no shopping tours, my colleagues mentioned the sale is conducted on the coach  -

These days most tour guides have no basic pay nor bonus. They rely 100% on commission from such purchases by tourist.

OT: Do our local travel agencies know about these tactics? And they think it is ok to subject their customers to such treatment? -

The Boss was very straightforward.. He openly disparage those who did not pay 100% to what he was saying. He exclaimed loudly that those people must be no -Singaporean cos Singaporeans are very well-mannered. He loves Singaporean.. those are very bad-mannered. :yikes:

Eh, but the local day tours I took in Shanghai couple of years back included such shopping destinations - but prob like 1/2 per trip and there was persuasian but no 'imprisonment' if no one buys. Afterall, the mainland chinese themselves would fight back if forced (they also know when pp conning them ba)...we SG sat back and eat popcorn.

the whole group was from Singapore.. majority singaporeans and 2 malaysians.he was being sarcastic to those who were uninterested.
That was the only shop we encountered which lowered the shutters.. he only unlocked after he finished his sales talk. -

Must have been a harrowing experience. One good reason to put me off group tours although these are oh so convenient.
