Hey there, I need some advice. My younger brother just got his O-level results today and he scored 3 points after CCA and higher MT deductions. He was thinking of going NJC or HCI but is worried about going to HCI. He is from a neighborhood secondary school and his PSLE was at 338. He feels that he is not 'smart' enough for top schools like HCJC and RJC and is afraid that he wont fit in. Any advice? Would NJC be a better fit for him? Or should he try for HCI? I feel that he should try for HCI but I dont want him to be pressured either.

I am unfamiliar with O lvl results getting into JC requirements.

      Just curious:
      1. What is the score before CCA and HMT deductions?
      2. How did your brother manage to get the score? Assisted by intensive tuitions? or independent self study?

Other than considering the points system, which school environment does your brother prefer?

All the best to your brother.

What’s your bro’s personality? Is he sociable? Adapts easily? Any same sec sch friends going to same jc as him?

NJC will have a better mix of students from many other sec schools compared to HCI. And with the segregation of ip and jae students, i think it is easier to fit in if he’s doesn’t have many friends going with him.
I don’t think going to NJC will short change your bro.
Let him make his own decision so that when things get tough, it’s due to his own choice and he is responsible for himself.

I would say HC. Anyway the chance of getting into HC is not 100% since he got 3, so put NJ as 2nd choice then see fate haha.

That whole lot under same branding or not?

Same branding diff story altogether. Solidarity 4ever! :rahrah:

Am just telling this student, of the three jcs, with his/her 4 pts, with just 30-40min bus ride, Njc shd be the best choice.

I know a couple of single digit pointers in my dept who could've gone to rjc, njc, hcjc, tjc or vjc but didnt. Went to yjc, ajc, nyjc instead cos they lacked confidence, had low esteem, dreaded the long distance at age 16.

Today they are rem by everyone as alumni of yjc, ajc, etc. Good on them;) no right or wrong. Diff network.

                  1. Before CCA and HMT, my bro's L1R5 is 7. 2 points for CCA and 2 points for HMT. This makes the total a 3.

                  2. Not very 'intensive'. He has tuition for A math and E math once a week. Other than that, its his own self-study and of course, help from teachers.

He is quite popular in school from what I see today. A lot of his friends were congratulating him, even his juniors. But he rarely goes out with them, he prefers to stay home. He sometimes ditches his friends when their outings get too boring for him. If he does make it to HCI, I doubt many of his sec friends would be able to follow him.

He's going to the open house tmr to look around. Thanks for all the advice guys.

I would put HCI as a first choice followed by NJC. Honestly, 7-4 is pretty unlikely to get in. From the MOE website: "If there is still a tie, say between two Singapore Citizens, the one with the better gross aggregate score will be posted into the course first." That means people who got 6-3 will be getting the places before your brother.

I agree that NJC has a better mix of students. It has a warm and nurturing environment, your bro would like it. HCI, on the other hand, has a more Chinese-environment, and many of the students come from certain schools (some cliques already formed). Both have different CCA niches, so your bro may want to take that into consideration too. In general, if he put NJC as first choice, I'm quite sure he won't regret it.
