i heard from 10 classes with 30 in a class become 40 in a class?
they will band based on the whole bite size assessment or only mastery test result?

end of P2 year end (Nov 2015) :-
schools will add up Total marks for each subject scored in those (whole byte-sized Term assessments + hands-on Performance tasks Practical work + Show & Tell assessments for English / Chinese), from P2 (Term 1 to Term 4), throughout entire year.

Then with the raw score per P2 student : schools computer start to tabulate data.

depend on how individual school, function.
Some schools still have these Top 2 or 3 classes, in P3.
Eg :
say (suppose) a school, have Top 2 classes.
From the computer data collected : the first 80 students with the highest scores in cohort level -
enter the Top 2 classes, in P3.
Why 80 ?
Because P3 classes become 40 students per class, no more 30 per P2 class.
So, the number of classes will shrink, from P2 going up into P3.

Different schools, differ.
Some schools' selection criteria for Top classes may be based on 2 subjects only (English + Maths), while other schools' selection criteria may be based on all 3 subjects (English + Maths + mother tongue).
Best to find out from your own school, what is their selection criteria ?

Sometimes after sorting, the difference between the 80th position & 81st position is only 1 mark.
For this, the 81st position ranked student cannot enter Top 2 classes.
Because of this, some kids got very traumatic.
They cried, they feel disappointed that they are not inside the Top 2 classes. So, some schools do away with this Top 2 classes thing.

in some other primary schools, they have removed all these Top classes.
So, no more Top classes. All become Mixed Ability P3 classes.
Since now no more Top class, then how does the school manage the students ?
Then, go by ability of the student.
they start to band students, according to their marks scored, per subject. Go by subject competency level, mastery of the subject, itself.

Eg : when come to P3 Maths lessons (as an example, to illustrate) :-
Different band : go different Maths class.

Eg : Band 1 (scored 85 & above) : go to Band 1 Maths class, where Tr will \"stretch\" them, further.

Band 2 (scored 70 to 84) : go to Band 2 Maths class, learn at normal pace.

Band 3 (scored 50 to 69) : go to Band 3 Maths class
Find out which area students weak in.
Is it weak in Section C (problem sums), or what ?
Help them.

Band 4 (scored below 50, or those borderline cases) : go to Band 4 Maths class.
Here, the Maths Tr will spend time to help kids to brush up their shaky, weak Foundation Maths concepts, because they must clear their Foundation concepts, properly.
If still can't clear, the child may end up doing Maths Foundation subject, when come to P5 / P6.
So, better help these kids, as much as possible.

End up : there will be 4 groups, when come to P3 Maths.

But, not all schools, may band Maths.
Some may band Only Chinese, but not Maths.
Others may band both Chinese, plus Maths.
It all depend on your own school.

For Chinese -
They will band you, into either Higher Chinese or Normal Chinese.
Find out from your school : what criteria, for Higher Chinese ?
Because for those targeting SAP Secondary schools (eg : Hwa Chong / NYGH, Catholic High / CHIJ St Nicholas, Nan Chiau High, River Valley High, Anglican High, Dunman High, Chung Cheng High, Maris Stella High, etc) when come to 2019 P6, Higher Chinese bonus points (+1, +2, +3), can help you to enter.

For those targeting IP non SAP Secondary schools -
Note that for IP Sec schools : most will start Higher Chinese in their Secondary 1 IP curriculum.
So, is learning Higher Chinese in primary schools, useful ? yes

Thanks alot for your information phtthp. How do we check with our school? Will the teacher share with us this type of information? Can we just ask them upfront whehter would there be banding or based on subject? I like Go by subject competency level method rather than having best class? Thank you.
