      for Psle Maths -
If the question (qn) specifically state that only use Model method to solve this qn, then No choice.

Otherwise, if qn never specify use what method, then students can use Any method to solve, as long as show all working properly, with explanation.

Will PSLE Maths questions ever specify a method to solve?

:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:[/quote]I see totally no sense to spell a method to solve a Maths question and to confirm that I am right, I asked my dd who did PSLE 3 years ago and she went \"Of course lah....\"

        Hi

Curious to know what is the format for compo writing at P2? I understand by psle the compo format will comprise of 3 different pictures and the student must write a story to include at least one of the picture. Are the schools modifying the lower primary’s writing in view of the change? Or it’s still 4 pictures description! Any idea? Thanks!

          P2 : still 4 picture

P3 : start to introduce 3 unrelated pic together, try to write a theme out of it

Hi, for my DD's primary school, her English teacher is teaching them the 4 pictures description composition. In fact they have practice in class how to write 4 pictures composition. Term 2, my dd will take her first English composition test with 4 pictures description.

For her external enrichment outside her primary school, she is learning the new PSLE format of 3 pictures description with a minimum of 1 picture used.

I have checked with her school English teacher and respect the way the teacher is teaching them to write the 4 pictures composition. Last year in P1, the single picture composition was taught to them.

I'm not sure if other P2 English teachers are teaching the new PSLE format composition of the 3 pictures type. Perhaps other parents would like to share their experience.

What is funny here, sembgal ?

If The qn want you to solve by the model method explicitly, not any other method, the qn will specify state \"may use model method to solve\".

But, if qn never specify, means that -
Students can use any method to solve, by showing workings & explanation :
Means that in Psle can use model method, algebra method, or any other method.

Private External enrichment / tuition centre may want to teach P2 kids ahead, in advance. Give them a leap start, so may throw them 3 picture, to try first.

However, where primary schools P2 are concerned, assessment is still based on 4 picture, In Term Tests for English Compo.
Only P3 Term 1 Term test : in schools, then start to throw them 3 picture. May confirm this with either your class P2 Compo Tr, or the English HOD, in your school.

If any school is different from what I just said, pls do share openly here. Thank you.

For English compo, school is still teaching by topic, e.g Chinese New Year. Have not gone into pictures yet.

How about for Chinese compo, is it 3 or 4 pictures now in school?

                    For zuo wen :

The Chinese Tr in my school said that whole year of P2 will practise 4 picture writing. She said the P2 Term 4 Chinese zuo wen test, is also 4 pic : not 1 big pic, nor 3 pic. Best to clarify with your own school

Dear phtthp, I do not find your comment funny. I also do not know why sembgal found my question so funny.

I do not think the PSLE Maths question will specify any preferred method to use. Some questions may be obvious to use a preferred method. Some students may prefer a particular method. But the Maths questions can be solved using more than one method so it is not fair to specify a method to solve the question.

The model method is the algebra method in visual form. Educators believe that young children cannot understand the abstract algebra method so they devise the model method. Educators believe that the model method is easier to understand for young children. However, different children have different learning styles and the model method is not suitable for all children.

Marshall Cavendish Institute's Maths Expert Dr Yeap Ban Har ever said this: do not force your child to use a certain method to solve the Maths questions. Teach your child different models and the method that first comes into your child's mind to solve the Maths questions is the best method for that child. Even when that method is the long guess and check method.

Once the students reach secondary 1, they will be asked to throw the model method out of their brain.

Hi phtthp, PSLE math questions will not state which method to use. It is up to the students to decide if they want to use model drawing or algebra to solve.

But for P2, they have to use model drawing to solve if the question asks explicitly for it to be solved by model drawing. Otherwise, the P2 students can grasp the problem sum and solve it with equations and workings. Model drawing wastes time and especially for those children who can visualize the problem in the head. The time could have been used for checking of careless mistakes if any.

But P6 Math questions are really challenging nowadays, which is different from our time when we were in primary schools. Thus, model drawing will come in handy.
