      Weaker kids should be given additional help, like allied support. These allied support staff teach kids and parents little tips like how to remember 6-9 timetable using fingers. With sufficient support, weaker kids will be more prepared to face national exams.

      When daughter told me grimly she got 10/20 for math test, I told her 'good job, you have passed.'
      You are doing a good job too!

        I am doing my best to keep expectations low and sincerely show I am happy for her passing tests.

          I checked the internet just now. I didn't know we can find out 6-9 timetable using fingers. Interesting.

            The method only applicable from 6 timetable onwards. I need some time to recall…it is a little time-consuming and not very helpful during exam. I prefer daughter to memorize it instead.

            The allied support officer is still working with daughter weekly on different areas. With the allied officer’s assistance, daughter’s spelling is learnt in school…giving her time at home doing other work like English, Math and science.

              Remind me please:

              At what percentage drop is generally acceptable ( at least to show kids have basic understanding) for the jump from p4 to p5?

                For me, a less than 10% drop in English, science and math is still acceptable.


                For chinese as long as he gets 70 and above I am happy. But I can still accept the 60 range.

                      Agree. My DD exclaimed aloud that she's going to think positive - that she passed by a mark (on the dot 50), rather than hear people tell her she almost failed.

                      For parents like myself, who has seen many moons, a pass is like a star. :love: It makes us feel happy that the children understand their own marked achievement. Small steps like this boost their confidence.

                        From what I understand, the initial drop will be at start of the year and the child should regain some grounds later. I personally feel anything below 80 percent shows lack of mastery. 20 percent leeway for carelessness, poor phrasing etc etc.

                        For ds's weakest subject, I accept anything. 😂

                        But come to think of it, I have been accepting anything for all subjects. I take test results as feedback on learning to see which areas need more attention. My kids have never been scolded for their results and ds2 came back last month to ask me why.
