Due to the heavy rain, the motorists slowed down as they could not see well.
Due to the heavy rain, the motorists had to slow down as they could not see well.
Which one better?
The first one. In this case, it's all about a cause and effect in the past tense. You don't need to have a participle here.

As a result of his hard work, Terence received a salary increment.
Which one better? -
guchengyouzi:
Hmmm...For the purpose of the question, the first answer may actually be better (even though it sounds clumsier) as it kept the \"very\" in the synthesis.Terence received a salary increment because he worked very hard.
As a result of________________________________________________.
As a result of him working very hard, Terence received a salary increment.
As a result of his hard work, Terence received a salary increment.
Which one better?
For synthesis questions, alternative answers are permitted. So then it will be a question of how much the markers will or will not allow. So I guess the safest bet is to keep as much information intact in your answer. -

jwxh:
Dean delivered his speech confidently during assembly.
________________________ with ______________________.
ans 1 : Dean delivered his speech with confidence during assembly.
ans 2 : Dean delivered his speech during assembly with confidence.
Both sentences are grammatical but with a slight difference in semantics.
However, for the purpose of this question, ans 1 is the more accurate answer as confident describes his speech, and not his speech during assembly.
It ran back again to the streets and tried and tried until finally a person took the
effort to follow the pig to check what the matter was. (to choose below words to replace effort)
1) strain
2) trouble <<< Ans
3) energy
4) endeavour
