I had omitted the had already present in the statement in Qn2. Qn1, I agree with you as well.

For the no sooner question - would it always be with the past participle in the event of "no sooner".

The first one. In this case, it's all about a cause and effect in the past tense. You don't need to have a participle here.

Hmmm...For the purpose of the question, the first answer may actually be better (even though it sounds clumsier) as it kept the \"very\" in the synthesis.
For synthesis questions, alternative answers are permitted. So then it will be a question of how much the markers will or will not allow. So I guess the safest bet is to keep as much information intact in your answer.
