Does anyone have comments on mpm centres at bishan, thomson, toa payoh and amk?
I am thinking about sending my k1 son to mpm, but wondering which centre will be better? I know bishan and thomson are like one-teacher operation where the teachers open the centre and have one classroom only. what about centres at toa payoh and amk? thanks. -
Just to share about MPM.
I signed up my daughter with MPM in Nov09 (then 4 year 6 month). She was tested and she jumped to book 17 to start with. Lucky MPM has a center that is very near to my place, and i just simply chose a center in Hougang.
Reason why hougang, …it is just for convenience sake. I am working mother, and i need my hubby / maid to ferry her to and fro for enrichment class.
in my opinion, it doesn’t really matter which center is good, because the approach of MPM is not really a teaching. I feel that i pay money is more for the exercise books/ questions, not for the teaching. The center has the instructors / coaches and the roles are more for guiding and coaching only, not really teaching.
In the past three months, I am quite happy with my girl, simply because she is enjoying her work books, and she is self motivated. She looks forward to go to the center every wed. I love the questions in the work book, really mind blower, certain questions my maid can’t even know the answer. The questions provide several approaches and trains logic in a very logical way. I must say they are very creative built up. -

HI ST999, i don't know about toa payoh and amk center, but in hougang it is also one classroom, one or two instructors at a time. I guess it is the way it is operating.Does anyone have comments on mpm centres at bishan, thomson, toa payoh and amk?

Question…
1. When should a child be able to do addition/subtraction? I notice my gal’s PCF K1 haven’t taught them.
2. When should a child be able to do multiply/divide?
3. Do you get your child to memorise the addition/ subtraction table?
4. Do they still teach mental sums in sch? Since Pri sch kids can use calculators. -
Hello Siak,
How do you think of MPM so far? does your child like it so far or show improvement? -

Hi,
Question...
1. When should a child be able to do addition/subtraction? I notice my gal's PCF K1 haven't taught them.
2. When should a child be able to do multiply/divide?
3. Do you get your child to memorise the addition/ subtraction table?
4. Do they still teach mental sums in sch? Since Pri sch kids can use calculators.
Let me try to answer this. Other parents, pls feel free to chip in.
1. My K1 has not learnt addition/ subtraction yet. She is with Kinderland and even with Enopi, she is focusing on numbers up to 40 at this point.
2. Division/ multiplication is usually around P1-P2.
3. Do you mean multiplication table????
4. Yes, mental sums are still very much required in lower primary. It's only at certain level that they are allowed to use calculator. -

\"Calculators and other technology tools are tools for learning and doing mathematics.
Question...
4. Do they still teach mental sums in sch? Since Pri sch kids can use calculators.
The introduction of calculators at P5 and P6 reflects a shift to give more focus to processes such as problem solving skills. ...
The introduction of calculators would not take away the importance of mental and manual computations. These skills are still emphasised as students need to have good number sense and estimation skills to check the reasonableness of answers obtained using the calculator.\"

wouldn't it be ridiculous if a child finished pri6 and doesn't know what is 4+5 or 4x5?? -

> By last K1 term... simple additions with the answers adding up to 10.
Question...
1. When should a child be able to do addition/subtraction? I notice my gal's PCF K1 haven't taught them.
> Differs from centre to centre..Daddy
> Montessorian children are exposed to multiplication and simple division in K2.
2. When should a child be able to do multiply/divide?
> In last semester of P1 (if i remember correctly), multiplication is intoduced via sets and groupings. No physical rote multiplying.Daddy
Didn't know need to memorize add/sub tables! :!:
3. Do you get your child to memorise the addition/ subtraction table?
But no... just to answer to that question... don't think so. Addition and
subtraction can be worked out easily by teaching children number bonds.Daddy
Mental sums, yes.
4. Do they still teach mental sums in sch? Since Pri sch kids can use calculators.
Calculators only for upper primary usage in preps for PSLE but then again only
subjected to use in one paper if i'm not mistaken.
