My child has been learning CMA for 2 years now since K1. Every week we struggle to finish the homework and she especially loathes the CD work. I'm wondering if we should stop the lessons but feel its a waste. I also worry that the knowledge so painstakingly gained so far will be forgotten very quickly. Any parents have good advice or tips? She is at level 9 now.

There were times when she gets a sum correct that she feels proud. So it's not all negative feelings all the time.

Hi, My son has been with CMA for 1.5 yrs. These days, I will break up the CD homework into a few sessions. Sometimes just do 20/30 per session. CD homework is really getting very tough so I don't insist him to finish it during the week, let him go slow n don't need to stress over it. So he may take 2 or 3 weeks to finish one cd. Anyway if you don't pass the teacher's test, you have to repeat the cd again. So better to go slow n steady. Which CD is your gal at now?

I negotiate homework w my kid's CMA teacher, esp if I know that there is going to be some tests upcoming in his pri school and he needs to do revision. Other times, I will break up the homework, like do 1-2 pages per sitting per day. When there is less school homework, then he will do a little more pages of CMA work. Anyway, at that level, mental only takes 3 mins per page and abacus only 10 mins per page. For CD, teacher breaks up its completion into 2...1st week is 40 qns and the 2nd week is 30 qns. And in between, if I find that my kid is not able to catch the questions and do the calculations before the next question comes up, I will pause the recording to give him a bit more time. Actually, it is very draining to do non-stop 70 questions in one sitting. No point if the kid gets a lot of wrongs. So demoralizing!

Thank you parents who replied to my post. My child is doing 2 digits 8 numbers now. It’s too tough even for adults. I also break up the cd homework into at least 2 sessions and each time we pause after 10 questions. Even that she can get very stressed up.


Glad to hear CMA is useful for school work. That’s a motivation for me to continue. When do you think is a good time to stop? 3 years? I don’t expect her to be an expert and will be satisfied if she can use the skills in math later on.

My elder one started CMA only when he was in K2. That was \"quite old\" as many kids started when they were in N2 or K1. I did not regret sending him to CMA as it does helps him in mental calculation when he entered Primary school. Teachers commented he is fast and accurate. He shows model drawings and workings in problem sums and uses mental to check the answers. Not sure if it's the training from CMA, it does helps him to pick up concepts fast. For The CD, yes, I also let him do 20-30 questions per week. Now in P3, he's doing 3 digits 8 numbers. Very tough in my opinion. However, I also heard different views from other parents that abacus confused their kids in school and they withdrew their kids subsequently. I think it works differently for each child. Even for my younger one, I find she did not progress as fast as her brother but still, it helps her.

CMA 8th International Arithmetic Olympiad will be held on 7th June @ Republic Polytechinc. It's a very interesting annual event and there are participants from several countries. Do let your child participate and join in the fun.
