Hi

Curious to know what is the format for compo writing at P2? I understand by psle the compo format will comprise of 3 different pictures and the student must write a story to include at least one of the picture. Are the schools modifying the lower primary's writing in view of the change? Or it's still 4 pictures description! Any idea? Thanks!

Hi, for my DD's primary school, her English teacher is teaching them the 4 pictures description composition. In fact they have practice in class how to write 4 pictures composition. Term 2, my dd will take her first English composition test with 4 pictures description.

For her external enrichment outside her primary school, she is learning the new PSLE format of 3 pictures description with a minimum of 1 picture used.
I have checked with her school English teacher and respect the way the teacher is teaching them to write the 4 pictures composition. Last year in P1, the single picture composition was taught to them.

I'm not sure if other P2 English teachers are teaching the new PSLE format composition of the 3 pictures type. Perhaps other parents would like to share their experience.

Hi Sembgal,
May I know the name of the external enrichment that your dd is attending? Reason being the school just informed me that they are switching to 3 picture compo this year and that the term 4 compo test will also be 3 picture format. I have called a few centres like TAS, Write Connection but all of them still not teaching 3 picture compo yet. Appreciate your sharing as I need to fire-fight now. Can pm me? Thanks a lot.
I have replied your pm.

My dd reads a lot but I don't see the improvement in writing. How often can the school teacher teach them to write composition? Perhaps 2 compositions a term? If by sending to a writing school to make my dd practise writing 10 compositions a term, I think it is more effective than purely relying on school teacher. 1 year in a writing school will provide 40 composition practice as compared to what the mainstream school is providing with the most only 8 compositions a year. It is a blessing if the school teacher guide in composition writing and what if the teacher sent the writing exercise home as homework and expect the child to complete on his/her own. I know my dd's school teacher will guide them in their compositions but I find 2 compositions a term really insufficient. Writing is a skill and must be mastered. Do you know compositions marks stand for 1/4 of the overall PSLE English paper marks and yet little emphasis is placed on coaching students to write compositions in schools, especially for higher levels? You do the math and you know what I mean.

it is difficult to rely on the school to give intensive coaching for composition when there are worksheets and also syllabus to follow. composition is a component which requires lots of time.

the new PSLE format gives 3 pictures…students can use 1, 2 or all 3 to write a composition. my daughter reads a lot, but has problems writing a compo.

2017 revised PSLE MTL examination format will see the modification of some item types to strengthen the learning and assessment of interaction skills. Short video clips will replace line drawings as stimuli for oral examinations to provide more engaging and realistic contexts for oral conversation.

With effect from 2015, there is no formal grouping of the students into the different language modules at Primary 1, to allow students more time to settle into the primary school environment. Students will only be grouped into the various language modules starting from Primary 2 based on their language abilities. To align with this refinement, there is no differentiation of learning content at Primary 1. However, schools have the flexibility to do some ability banding in situations that require such support, such as to better help students with little or no prior exposure to CL at the start of the semester.
In the 2015 primary school CL curriculum, the teaching of Hanyu Pinyin is better integrated with the teaching of language skills. Students learn Hanyu Pinyin together with the recognition of the characters. These characters would have appeared earlier as oral vocabulary in the teaching of oral skills and in the subsequent reading text.

...
The language refered to here, apply to Mother tongue Chinese.
(not sure about Malay / Tamil Mother tongue)
That is, Banding of Chinese for students, into either Normal Chinese or Higher Chinese.

as for 2015 primary school CL curriculum, where Hanyu Pinyin must start with a capital letter for the first Chinese character used -
this has no impact to our batch (2007 born), only impact 2008 children born and thereafter.

But doesn't affect English language, from P2 to P4 :
because there is no banding into Normal English nor Higher English

However, come the final, last 2 years in Upper primary : P5 / P6
schools start to introduce Foundation subjects.
There are 4 possible Foundation subjects for some students, to prepare for PSLE.
- Foundation Maths
- Foundation Science

- Foundation Chinese, for language
- Foundation English, for language

for P2 Term 4 Composition Assessment this year (October), most primary schools still using 4 picture format. Can be :-
- 4 picture in sequence one after another, or
- 3 picture in sequence, plus a question mark at the 4th picture, to let students draw their own conclusion.

can't rely on schools to teach compo :
because 1 Term (10 weeks) inside only write 1 or 2 miserable English compo.
Some schools in P2 Term 1 (last term) did not even kickstart their students on writing any English compo, at all.

as for Chinese 作 文
some schools in P2 Term 1 -
the faster schools request their pupils to write 2 to 3 作 文 (a few paragraphs, passage type), per Term

the slower schools did not even kickstart pupils in writing 作 文,
although some schools did ask pupils to write / construct 1 sentence, beside a given picture. But is more like \"zao ju\", rather than 作 文

however from P3 Term 1 onwards, schools start using the new PSLE format : 3 picture

Only 2 compo a term? My ds having compo every week, sometimes about 2 compo a week. Take for eg, this long weekend, he had to write 2 compos and 1 booklet. Good for him to practise writing but at times it is too much for him to handle.

really ?

Which primary school is this, that make students in school \"write Compo every week, sometimes about 2 Compo a week \" ?

Your child P2, P3 or P4 ?

My ds P2 this year. It’s not the school, it’s the teacher who makes the difference. Cos my dd in the same school and P5 this year, she has not been writing any compo at all!!! Hahaha

This is truly the epitome of kiasu-ism.

Really, my parents didn’t even know what the GEP was until I got in (the yellow envelope). Isn’t it just a little bit too early to be worrying about PSLE? I know I’m nowhere near qualified to give parenting advice, and I’m sorry if I come off as rude or nosy, but when I was in P2 I appreciated the fact that I got the chance to live my childhood.

U are right, P2 is still far away from Psle.

4 more years still a long way away
