Hello All,
My girl is in P6 from a neighbourhood school. She has been keen in Visual Arts for some years and would like to join SOTA. However, she is just an average student and I worry she won’t make it although she is confident with her artwork. I will go to the Open House tomorrow to find out more. Does anyone know the min aggregate for PSLE if any to join Visual Arts?

Farah23,hope you found out what you were looking for at the open house yesterday. SOTA requires that the child qualifies for express once they pass the Talent Academy. That said, I guess it would be best if our DC do as well as they can for the PSLE coz IB does sound rigorous.

You need to talk to your DD what she hopes to do after her 6 years of post-primary education. Students who know what they want to be will most likely do well in the school that can help them achieve their objective. Personally, I think most SOTA students have in mind what they want to be after 6 years of SOTA education...at least for my DD.Hi, my DD (P6) is interested in Literary Arts (English) and she wants to take the audition for SOTA. She has a passion of creative writings and loves the literature. She is also one of the top scorers in her cohort (English) and got awards. But as a traditional minded parents, we are bit unsure what to do. As of now, we were thinking she should select her choice after completing secondary schools or later as this is too early. May be we are wrong..not sure... :scratchhead:
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Most SOTA students go on to do degree courses related to the Arts. And most will go overseas to further their education. So if this is what your DD wants and it is her passion, she should be able to do well in SOTA. If the parents do not wish for their children to be in the Arts field, then parents and child should talk to each other. -

My Yr 3 son joined SOTA with psle score of 20x. We were worried whether he can cope with IB but then, in a mainstream school, we believe he will struggle too. So far, he was able to cope. Homework is definitely manageable in the first 2 years. The pace in the 1st 2 years was not so punishing and it allowed him to progress and enjoy learning. Overall, we thought he did pretty well especially in Visual Arts and Humanities subjects. Even for Maths, a subject he struggled in primary school. He told me recently that Math is now his fave subject

That's a good question. I always thought they would be told on the spot but as mentioned, my dd said no one in her JA class was told anything...which is quite hard to imagine coz none in a class of 20 were good enough? And besides, she knows that some were even CSTD summer school winners...surely they would be good enough to be called. :scratchhead:[/quote]

Thanks ayeitsme. Think this years JA is totally through schools. We had to apply thru school to do JA. And till now, my girl hasn't heard any of her friends from other schools have gotten email regarding skipping 1st round of auditions. Guess they may have really stopped that practice this year. -
For visual arts, SOTA website indicates that support/research material is required together with the pieces that are submitted for the screening exercise in May.
Does anyone know what this support/research material is and what does it entail? It seems like this is a new requirement this year. -
The school has had a change of management and isn’t that geared into the arts as compared to the previous principal and vp.
They now have an agreement that if you opt in, the school takes over complete rights to your child’s works - with no royalties whatsoever. Of course, you may opt out, which if you do, then the school will not consider your child for participation in exhibitions and commissions.
How is this beneficial to the children at SOTA? I do not see it at all. How does this benefit the school? Ahhh! The school will have,in their own words: "perpetual, worldwide, exclusive, royalty-free rights to use, modify, reproduce, display, perform, communicate and otherwise use the students works for all its educational, promotional and other purposes (commercial or otherwise).
The school seems to be going the wrong direction. I ask that parents of would be Sotarians to reconsider. -
