Omg , when will be upon 40 ? P4 ?
-
So far, I think my P3 only wrote 4 compositions in school (2 each for Chinese & English). I find there is insufficient practice/ preparation for the students to do well in the upcoming SA. It is not easy to write because given only a small tiny picture, students need to be really imaginative to be able to come up with a decent plot. At least, I find the 4 pictures type is easier as it somehow provides a step-by-step guide for the younger writers. I am totally clueless how to prepare him for the SA, especially the Chinese composition. Marking is very strict and worse, there is no feedback on how to improve. :?: -
Yes I agree that marking is very strict .
My child doesn't like to read story book at all , thus compo writing is very weak .
Teacher just keep giving them example of what the good students in class wrote . And ask them copy . One of my child homework is to coy the whole compo that teacher wrote .
I m so stress now . The compo is sure going to pull down the marks badly

joajoa, Not sure if it p4/p5 to upon 40. But this is psle format to upon 40…so very soon it will be.
precious2.lee, follow the requirement from school for chinese…write a few conversation, describe the feelings of the ppl inside the pics…But do not write out of the pic, cos no marks will be given. In general for chinese compo, if write half to 3 quarter page its 12marks, 1page 12-15marks…1.5 to full 2 page can get 17-20marks…thats my observation so far for P3.
But i must emphasize that for chinese compo, i really noticed a bulk of kids in my ds class is scoring at 18-20/20. It is less strict for chinese compo, so easier to score marks…
For English, I find it really strict for P3…I find sch teach limited, but expect so much. Last yr, P3 SA2 model compo given out to the kids…I was horrified to find 2 compos have "EXACT" same words for the intro…and another 2 compo hv very similar ending…I wished the teachers had been more careful in selecting model compos, it just made parents like me…puzzling which tuition center is the work from…haiz
At P3, those had tuition in languages will shine with their written compo…a big difference for beginner vs those that hv been writing for the past yrs.
by the way, this issue with high expectation of compos is not limited to PCPS. It occur to every sch. Some may ask for even higher std than PCPS. -

The students are having Oral this week, but the difference from previous years is that my P5 boy is having his Oral exams after school hours. I’m worried that he would be tired and cannot focus well.
May I check with the P6 parents, was this the norm last year for your child too? Was the HCL exams also conducted after school hours ? -
I agree with muska that Pcps teaches very little on compo and expect a lot. Not many compositions to write in a semester. The most 5 before SA1. My P4 child had 3 so far. The good and the bad differs a lot, took home some by accident. The normal ones for English get around 12 or 13 and the better ones at 14.5-17. It is so difficult to score as compos are subjective and we don’t get to see their mistakes during exams. However, I do remember their work will be marked by 2 teachers. Don’t know if this still stands. Anyway, just have to get our children do better for the rest of the papers…

i also don’t quite like when the teacher ask pupils to do their essays at home, especially for Chinese. I know we shouldn’t , but as parents we tend to want to help to correct them as we couldn’t bear to see them submitting badly "written" essays. :1
I have feedback to the teacher that it is better for pupils to write in class, as under pressure i feel they will put in more effort , and it is better for teacher/parents to know the standard of the children. The teacher replied they have much to cover and may not have time for that.
