Learning Chinese is not just sending the child to enrichment. The parents must converse with the child in Mandarin. It’s just like piano, if you do not practise, how are you going to improve??

In addition, I would like to suggest some tips for primary school students currently struggling with chinese. Although my chinese has always been my best subject until now, students should not blame their foundations for their weak grades in upper primary chinese. Although the environment(ie english vs chinese speaking families) ay play a part, but I feel that it is all about whether the child is willing to put in effort to pick up the language. My mother is an experienced full time chinese tutor for primary and secondary school. I've seen many students whose grades are near failing and made drastic improvements just after 1 to 2 months of tuition. I've also seen students who did not manage to improve despitee my mother putting in the exact same effort in teaching her students, engaging them with ways that suit their learning style and tackling Chinese language with ease. The main reason for this difference is whether the student is willing to put in the hard work to memorise and take note of the words, phrases, sentence structures, answering techniques, creative essays,etc. Of course, having a tutor will allow you to know where to start and how do you go about helping and guiding your child to make improvements in Chinese grades. I would like to emphasize on the word 'guiding'. A tutor is only meant to do the job of 'guiding' his student in learning the language, telling him what are the important points to note, where and why have he gone wrong and most importantly, how to improve. It is not about having a tutor who ask the shild to do work and do work and do more work during lesson time, mark, return and do work again. He should be able to spend lesson time going through new and unfamiliar question types and how to tackle them while letting the child try out a few times, highlighting keywords and mistakes and go through mistakes the child has made for the homework he assigned the previous lesson. At least this is what I believe a tutor should do.

As I have mentioned, it is all about hard work. Many parents may believe that the key to fully grasp a language is to read widely. Storybooks, reference books, model essays,etc. Yes they help. But they dont when your child read without understanding and learning. The purpose of reading is to get inspiration of how to structure a composition, in such a away that the plot is interesting, a plot twist is relevant and fits in nicely, the conclusion is not dull and boring. It may also serve the purpose of helping the child to recognise certain common sentence structures and words used to describe certain emotions or actions. That is what books do and to me, a student who is weak in chinese will not benefit much from merely reading books and 80% comes from rote memorization.

Primary school chinese is actually very easy to score well regardless of whether your foundation is strong or weak. Buy a revision book with all words that are tested. Spend the time memorising the 汉语拼音, how to write them their meaning, how to use them and 词语搭配. Buy an assessment book with all the mcqs and your child will realise that he will be scoring at least 8/10 for most. For comprehension, it can't really be help but the words used are certainly within syllabus so knowing vocabulary well means that there will be improvement in comprehension too. For composition, it is mainly the sentence structure and this is where a tutor can help. For the rest, it is again memorising good phrases, paragraphs, even good essays with good plots to rewrite them in your child's own composition.

One of the most common concerns parents have in Singapore is their children's ability to pick up Chinese. A crucial subject for children in their grade, but yet unlike other subjects, Chinese does not rely on pure memorization, but rather on the ability to understand and appropriately use the language.


As with most languages, a child should pick up Chinese as early as possible (from 0 - 7 years old). However, as many of us came from a rather English based environment, we are unable to create that environment needed for the child. Many parents thought simply sending the child to tuition would make a difference but unfortunately 7/10 parents discovered that this is not sufficient.

In Singapore, as observed in the forum, many parents are having issues with Chinese. Chinese unlike many other subjects is based on understanding and not so much about memorizing. Many students find it difficult as most parents did not set up the environment that is needed to make Chinese learning fun and interactive. Most students when starting preschools or primary schools often indicate that they dislike and hate Chinese.

We live in canada, my daughter who is seven years old is learning chinese mandarin，we are learning in Hanbridge Mandarin school online.their Chinese course for kids is designed for children from 3 to 9 years old. They have experienced teachers provide students with teaching in all four main areas of language learning: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This online kids Chinese course helps children learn Chinese via playing games, video and songs, discussing fun topics. Their kids' Chinese courses for are split into 4 different levels, ranging from Beginner to Advanced.
