The average retention rate in JC1 is 10%? This is for all JCs? That sounds high.
Pros and cons.blurblob11:
Can't deny retention is a good solution to improve on a school's performance.
It does ensure that the A'level results look good but their A'level students spend a year more than others. It's a strategy to improve their A'level results to attract better students and hopefully, with better students, their retention rate can revert to the average rate of 10%. -

trueNowadays no one stops at A levels or Poly.
The final destination is a degree.
after \"A\" level : students enter uni
after \"Poly\" : those who can make it enter uni
those who can't enter work force first, gain some years of working experience first, after that, can come back study uni part-time basis, or if parents have $ to sponsor child go overseas uni, they can go, have chance to experience overseas culture living in another country -

In 2012 and 2013, MOE responded to a similar question in Parliament and the figures shared were that 6% of each cohort of JC1 was retained and that the highest 2 JCs' retention rates reached 15%. I suppose the retention rates could have been consistent and used 10% as a round-up estimate.

Brings to mind what my JC teacher friends say; that JC isn't for everyone. Might be worthwhile considering bringing back the 3 year Pre-U system of the past which allows students 3 years to prepare for the A levels. We have that now in MI but given that so many students are being retained in J1 anyway, with many more re-taking their A levels at the end of 2 years, we might want to introduce more of such institutions.

I heard must have very good poly results then can use it to enter the university? If not still advisable to do A level & then enter the university.

Any idea which are the 2 JCs?

I heard that Yishun and Innova JC's retention rate is 10% in 2014 but Meridian and Serangoon have exceeded 10%. I can't verify though.
Anyone care to share the current retention rate of the JC he/she knows? -

our local uni give priority to \"A\" level students first.

I remember that it wasn't a popular choice and most pre-u graduates were not as well prepared as those from jcs. Most of them couldn't go to the U after 3 years of pre-u education.

The 3-year pre-u education was not as rigorous as the 2-year jc education, which was one of the reasons most pre-u graduates couldn't get good A levels results.
Given the option, I would rather my child retain in a jc than go to a pre-u centre. -

:goodpost: :thankyou:Jetsetter, that's very encouraging for the new IPJC students, nice of you. :please:
If we can turn back the clock, to have the full information we have now, when these students & their parents who opted to join the new JC knowing well that they will never have a chance to step into the new JC compound and the temp site would be at Mt Sinai instead of ITE Bishan, likely, we won't see so many parents feeling fustrated today.
A freind of mine told me she had to travel very far to a temp site during her time when her school was under renovation. Nobody made a noise because the school did not promise them a nearer temp site and later switched to one further away so there was no expectation. She said her school did not owe her anything then but now this case is different. There is a total absence of transparency and accountability. -

Dunman had a high calibre principal then. That is one major factor to have the stellar results. High cutoff point means students quality might be better from the start. Whereas this new JC a lot of students might just be looking to skip the stressful O level exams and they are happy already. :siam:sinoboy:

众志成城,团结一致的精神非常重要:)
与其耿耿于怀,不如共同努力,将3所母校的优良传统发扬光大,让新母校的明天因你们而自豪? :rahrah:
说不定2018/19年的总统奖学金得主就出自于new JC门下! :imanangel:
The difference could be one group was told of the move before they applied and went in with open eyes and the other group went in thinking of the promised sites so please dont anyhow jump to conclusion. If everything is transparent and reasonable , I don't think people would resort to petition like the fernvale case.[/quote] :goodpost:
