These are not factual, only speculations right? However, what is factual is the JC was designated to be in Bishan and the interim JC location also in Bishan. So they have to take a reference point for the difference in distance, which is Bishan to Ghim Moh to put up their case... Do you expect them to be unreasonable to take distance from all the individual homes? :faint:mashy:
Am I right to assume that most of the unhappy parents are from the boys' school since it's always about bishan? St nicks is in amk and nobody said anything about going from there. Those from scgs have also not said anything.
Sounds like it. Even the Straits times reported two concerned fathers with SONS questioned the minister at the Bishan community event. St nicks probably don't care since the school fees still reasonable. scgs parents although lugi the most as the fees paid are ten times more than other two schools but travel time got some advantage maybe as scgs is nearer ghim moh.

That was just a Bishan Community Event and understandably, only residents of Bishan were there and among them, it so happened that 2 had kids from CH. It cannot be used as supporting proof that only CH parents were unhappy.mashy:

[/quote]Perhaps I was not clear. 2 fathers with sons had questions could not conclude that that there were no parents from St Nics and SCGS present......so it could not be factual to say that most of the unhappy parents were from CHS.

Perhaps the govt might think you have missed the big picture. Which is more significant? Setting up an MRT line that can serve 5+ mil people or a small school that can house a mere 1800 pupils? While the distance is a consideration for some, being overly obsessed with the 5 or 10 mins difference in traveling time miss the big picture. For the affected parents, it's the loss of govt credibility and uncertainties about the new JC.
For a concerned taxpayer and citizen, it is about the accountability and the competency of the govt. It is quite amazing that a relatively simple matter of preparing an interim site and physically building a new JC on the designated permanent site has now lead to so much unhappiness and the matter is still pending a satisfactory resolution and explanation.
Who knows, it may amaze the govt that a relatively simple matter such as a change in interim site and delay in building a new govt school can lead to so much unhappiness for those affected.
How much confidence will the govt have on these pupils whom they planned to groom into future leaders or pillars of SGP if they cannot even make some sacrifices.
Perhaps the govt has overlooked the fact that the interest of children, in this new generation Singaporean parents, are of utmost importance above all national matters.
Just another controversial viewpoint. -

Somewhat agree. In addition, any layman can tell that the mrt project is one of high complexity. As many of our (strawberry) young men have foregone engineering jobs for the more comfortable business sectors, we could be short of expertise in this area. Bringing in too many FT and the govt will hear complaints too.

There are other bigger national issues to worry about than the temporary site of a new school. If the issue is priority then things will move very fast like the surprise acquisition of the jurong country club for the high speed rail terminus.

Obviously you are not an affected parent.

Reminds me of the \"No studio flats for the elderly in my backyard\" incident where residents from Toh Yi estate objected to the building of studio flats for the elderly next to their HDB blocks. I thought The residents were being very selfish and I didn't understand their concerns. Now as an affected parent myself, I start to understand how the Toh Yi residents felt. It is always easy to talk about the abstract but when one's direct interest is trampled on, I dare say the perspectives will change very fast.
Thee should not be any conflict between building a MRT line and a new JC. Likewise, there is no conflict between a credible, effective and efficient government that manages the national interests as well as takes care of the ground concerns. Why position a possible conflict when there is none? The government can (and should) continue to build their MRT as most of the parents are not asking anything in return. They only asked for a dialogue with the powers to be to seek clarity and re-assurances.
This episode is a small matter and could have been nipped in the bud early had there been better coordination between the different government agencies, more transparent information sharing and pro-active communications with the parents and students.
As parents, we always hope that our children will lead better lives than us. And it is this pursuit of a better life that makes us demanding and perhaps, also ensures that Singapore does not stagnate. -

However, I need to say that not all parents are like this. I believe there are still many out there who understand and will not groom their children to be strawberries.
It is just a small issue but some chose to make such a big deal out of it. Maybe next time their army camp shift further into the jungle, they also wanna complain. If have training exercise, complain don't let their boys sleep and thus they cannot fight a war properly. :siam:
