There is always a risk of theft in school or careless act. My dd's school actually discourage them to bring 1 week or 1 month allowance to school. So dd try not to have more than $10 in her wallet, unless need to pay for extra things.

But you didn't ask her to bring some \"emergency money\" in case got lost & need to take taxi or what not ?

I used to put aside \"emergency\" money in a not-so-obvious compartment in her school bag during primary school days ($2) in case she lost her pocket money for whatever reason. It is all the time there. DD understood that it was not be touched except under urgent circumstances. Now that she is Sec sch, it is at higher amount.

Every newyear, my mum will give my DD an angpow to start the school. She will keep in her school bag. This is also her emergency $ too.

I used to get $100 a month.

$4 a day, $20 is for ezlink card.
But now in JC, I got $250!! Woohoo.
Actually, that’s cause JC food is really 2X the price of Sec school. Plus in JC you have to stay back almost everyday.

Wow.... This is really quite different from the amount I see in my school. I get $35 a week, solely for food alone, but I usually put $10 in my savings first. My parents don't know about this My allowance is going to get slashed by $10 a week though, to pay for taking up piano (a bargaining tool to get them to consent)


I'm one of the worst \"paid\" in my class, typically my classmates get something like $60 a week (this particular friend lives in a bungalow, to give you some context). However another friend (who is under financial assistance) still gets allowance ranging from $35 to $50.

Originally wanted to come here to site evidence as to why I don't get enough allowance, looks like that backfired :oops: :oops:

However in my school we all stay back until 6pm or later almost every day thanks to CCA....

Both my DD (JC2) n my DS (Sec 4) get $35 for food per week.


I thought this is a reasonable amount.

We used to give her $50/week to cover bf, lunch & dinner because she stays late on most days or go for tuition after school and doe not have dinner with us. Then, when we had dinner at NEX food court one day, we realised that the cheapest food - mixed-veggies w/rice or a Hokkein Mee costs $4.50… we had since increased her allowance to $80/week. This does not include her bus fare for the month.

She brings bread or biscuits for snack. The money is for her lunch.

Yes, I agree. The price guide on the billboard said that 2 veggies + 1 meat probably costs $3.50. But most of the veggies are cooked with meat and they considered that as meat dishes. I had two veggies that unfortunately contained minced meat and that cost me $5! I find this selling tactic very disgusting but I'm sure the owner is very proud of himself/herself for being innovative. *sigh*

Which meals does she eat at the food court? School canteen food would be cheaper. Or could she pack some stuff from home for breakfast? My girls get $30 a week but only eat recess and lunch in school. We don't encourage eating outside school. One eats breakfast at home, but the other one prefers to pack breakfast and eat it after she gets to school. They have dinner at home.
